has anyone installed a manual (csl) steering box in a cs? i know they are terrific in csl, but have heard the added weight of the cs make it very difficult at anything below highway speed?

manual box

I installed one in jabberjaw, and yes the steering is difficult from rest, but the feeling at speed more than makes up for it. I like it a lot for what this performance restomod is intended. But I wouldn't put one in my original CS. I like the steering in that for what that car is, namely a GT cruiser.

+1 to what CCr2002 said.

suggest driving a manual box cpe before you commit/pull trigger. That's what I did before parting with my manual box that was on the shelf. Bro and I raced with power steering box and had no issues other than the additional weight.

+3. I really wanted to put a manual box in my car when I started out, but after thorough investigation ultimately decided against it. I will admit to still waffling sometimes.

ccr2002,
speaking of jabberjaw, did you finish your restoration? im sure im not alone in saying would love to see some pictures of the finished project.

jabberjaw

Oh boy...where to begin. Don has been a huge help and I must say it is running great. Thank you Don. There are a few fit and finish things that I am addressing right now. Most of the interior is taken apart at the moment to detail and repair/replace everything I can. I really could use some excellent condition ac side console panels...but I'm sure the list is long of people looking for those. In fact, I missed some last week when someone used BIN on ebay. Anyway...It's a sweet car and I will definitely post pics as soon as it is done. It needed quite a bit of work.

take a look at the euro restoration that was posted earlier today and the leather covered panels, shift surround and door handles. something like that could look great on jabberjaw as a restomod. it is really hard to find a decent set of these panels - most of them have some form of trauma ... generally the upper triangle below where they meet the dash. also, around the screw holes or the side air vents. of course there have been some good recoverings with vinyl.

Jabberjaw is on the top two best driving coupes list for me. Jon Iversons car is the other one on the list. Both cars run like a dream, a very fast dream. No coincidence they are both tuned strictly for performance with MegaSquirt.

Back to power steering

There are a couple of options on the manual boxes, the difference being in the ratio, and hence how hard the car is to manoeuvre at parking. The original, early, CSLs had a box ending in 108 on the ZF manufacturing plate on the box. Manual boxed Bavarias, as you call them in the US (3.0 S in Europe) had a box ending in 153. I have a couple in stock of both, and have them in some of my cars, CSLs and "CSLs". I put it in a normal cruiser CSi but am going back to power steering on that car. I honestly cannot find much difference when driving the cars, besides the heavy movement at very low speeds. I think a well sorted PS box is very tight, and on this particular car I run stock wheels with XWX 205 VR14 tyres, so there is a bit of play there, vs the cars on 16" wheels with modern rubber band tyres.

Did this make sense? Probably not, but bottom line is: I tried it on a normal CSi and decided to go back to a (rebuilt) PS box.
