I may be getting some BMW style 5 wheels in 16x8.

I may also be getting another set that has new tires in 205/55/16 size.

Is the 205 width too narrow for an 8 inch wheel? Should it be at least 225?

Thank you

you can look up this information on tirerack.com. search by size, input 205/55/16 ... then click on a tire and then look at the specs. i looked up bridgestone s04 ... and it said that this tire size was for a wheel that is between 5.5" x 7.5" wide. the section width is 8.4" and the tread width is 7.6" i looked up the continental extreme contact dw ... same notes

Check the offset on those wheels as well. Some of the 16's had rather incompatible offsets.

Have you seen the deep dish 16x8 bbs RZ's from an 850? They are amazing! I haven't looked into fitment that much, as they are very hard to come by.

Front wheels ET 11 with rolled inner fender lips.
Rear wheels up to ET 24.

OEM tire Size: 195/70/14 – dia. 24.7”, 77.7” circ, rev / mile = 815
Substitutes: 205/60/15 – dia. 24.7”, 77.6” circ, rev / mile = 817
Substitutes: 225/55/15 – dia. 24.7”, 77.7” circ, rev / mile = 815
Substitutes: 205/55/16 – dia. 24.9”, 78.2” circ, rev / mile = 811
Substitutes: 225/50/16 – dia. 24.9” 78.1” circ, rev / mile = 811
Substitutes: 245/40/17 – dia. 24.7”, 77.6” circ, rev / mile = 816

Thanks rs. The tires I am looking at are Eagle RS-A

Markos, the 16s I am looking at are these:

I figured those were the ones. There is a guy near Seattle that has those on his coupe. He says they stick out kind of far, and he isn't a fan. I don't really know the guy, but I can see if he wants to send a pic.

Those are ET23, which is the same as the popular 17x8 two piece Style 5 (bbs rc090). I would think that they would be just fine.

I am pretty sure those are not the same as the wheels as the BBS 17 x 8 style 5. That was a two piece wheel; entirely different construction.

The information I am seeing does not show that wheel in a 16 x 8 configuration. 16 x 7.5 on the M3 is the widest.

edit: rc090 is actually et20...

Sorry I wasn't clear. Clearly they are different wheels. However, The 2 piece style 5 is also 8" at ET23, the same as the wheels posted above. My point was that there are numerous forum members run that width and offset successfully. A 3mm spacer is recommended up front to clear the struts.

I plan on running 225's. That was based on content posted by some members running 8" ET23's.

Same question different rim size

I have 14 x 7 Alpina rims currently 225 x 60 x 14 tires.
Fender lips rolled, everything fits and I like the 14"look.
Considering a staggered set up, 205 x 70 x 14 front and 225 x 60 x 14 rear, BF Goodrich with the raised white letters mounted inside so invisible,

Will this look funny? Would 215 x 60 x 14 look better in front?

That is right.

ET23.

Based on that Tire Rack page, 205 is indeed too narrow. Surprised because I remember seeing a polaris coupe in the parking lot at the Socal Vintage meeting a couple of weeks ago with 205s on the 16"bbs. But that was the 2 piece versions so it may have been a 16x7...
the 2 piece version was probably a staggered setup - 7" fronts

you will need to fit check the rubbing on the strut and making sure the fender lip is rolled. 8" et 23 places the center of the wheel in the same place as the center of a 7" et 11. the difference is, the wheel hangs 1/2" further to the inside and the outside. with a 7" wide - 16" front w/ 205/55-16 i have caught the fender lip - twice. i took the 16" wheels off until i have both decamber plates and rolled fender lips.

i get that some people like the look of 14s ... the most perfect balance is the look of the 15" wheels on Stevehose's polaris.

From what I've read about 225's at 8" ET23, fitment is tight. One manufacturer may run and anothe may not. I'm just going to cheat and buy the same tires as another member (ccmguy8). Michelin pilot super sports.

I'd prefer not to roll the fenders. If I need to, there is a guy on CL that rents the tool for $45.

I ran the 17x8 Style 5 wheels on my car for some time, I had 245 width tires on all 4 corners, the rears fit perfectly. The fronts I had to run a 3mm spacer to clear the struts but I did have fender rubbing issues due to the tire width. I would recommend running 225 in the rears and 215 in the fronts.

Thanks for the tip. Did the rears rub also? I like the idea of 245 in the rear. You know, so I can put that 168hp to the road. :D

I have 245/40/17 ET20 8" wheels on the rear with no rubbing issues. I have since added 10mm spacers to increase the track width and still no issues either fender or shock tube.

The fronts are 225/45/17 ET20 8" wheels and while technically it's rubbed the paint off on the driver side strut it turns freely when the wheel is jacked up off the ground. I have a set of 1.5mm spacers but haven't bothered with them - yet.

Can you visually make out the different aspect ratios's. I would think that a smaller aspect ratio on the rear would look "off".

if you look at 911s, the fronts are 35 series and the rears are 30 series ... the rears are much wider and the profile is proportional to the width. 235/35-19 fronts and 295/30-19 rears. the overall tire diameter is 25.5" front / 26.1" rear ... so if there is a significant width difference, the diameter would be close to the same even though the profile is different.

the staggered setup for 16" wheels on the coupe 205/55-16 and 225/50-16 are both 24.9" diameter - 831 revolutions / mile. the section width is 8.4" front / 9.2" rear.
if you look at the 17" staggered tires on the coupe 225/45-17 and 245/40-17 - they are different diameters 25" front / 24.7" rear (831 front / 841 revolutions rear) - the section width is quite a bit different - 8.9" front / 9.8" rear

based on the catching a fender lip with the 205/55-16 ... i wouldn't try the 225/45-17 without rolling
