New Coupe stainless steel bumpers on EBay!

DIRECT LINK

Appears to be an excellent reproduction SS front and rear bumper set. No way to know how they fit though. At $2400, it's not really that expensive when one considers the cost of a new f&r replacement set.

The bumperettes or under/over riders look odd....no rubber for anything. This where the bumpers get labour intensive....rails and rubber, re-chrome....it adds up.

Rear mounts are said to be 73 style hoops, good luck finding the rubber hoop covers. Even though chroming is not cheap these are affordable only if you don't have the existing cores.

would they also be heavier?

Heavier than what? Are you asking if SS bumpers would be heavier than the original plated steel bumpers? My guess would be "not appreciably".

Two comments on these bumpers:

1) $2,400 seems like a lot of money, but I'm sure the tooling cost + polishing labor + shipping from Europe are all significant. As Chris wrote, it probably would be cheaper to find, straighten, and replate a good, used set. But maybe not a whole lot cheaper.

2) From the ebay pictures, these bumpers seem to lack the holes to mount the metal pieces that secure the rubber strips. Sure you could drill them, but it would be nice if they were already there. The pictures on ebay aren't great - I can't tell if the rear bumpers have the holes where the ends of the rubber strip poke in.

My guess is that the designer of these repro bumpers intended for them to be used without the black rubber strips. Which wouldn't look very original, but might look OK in a Kustom sort of way. The ebay description calls them "European style", but I'm not aware of any differences between US and European bumpers on pre-1974 cars (OK, the '73 overriders were different).

yes Jay, was asking whether the s/s bumpers will be heavier than the original ones overall 8), may also depend on the thickness (of the metal sheets) I guess.
I agree too, will be much easier if the holes were there for the rubber inserts

Most likely produced here: http://www.sgbumperscar.com/aboutus.htm

Or at least that's where I'd start if I were looking for such a thing.

I believe their products are formed by hand and will show evidence of same versus the original. -subtle waviness in the finish, but I haven't seen them myself.

I don't know that there'd be any value in chroming a set, given that you should be able to sand and polish stainless back to a mirror finish after any wear if I'm not mistaken.

My mistake not to go down and see the description...a little nebulas as to what you get. Looking at the Penske site most of what one may need is still available. All in all a good thing in my mind. Indeed, the bumpers as to beautify DOT coupes are getting rare. If someone lives near Folsom, CA as to get a look and report?

I believe the lack of holes for the rubber strips would make the rear bumper almost identical to the one on the 2000cs, which has no rubber.

I'm currently running without rubber on the rear bumper. I really like the look, but wish the holes weren't there. I also wish there was a way to delete the rubber on the front bumper without leaving a big hole in the overrider. I, for one, am happy the option exists to go without the rubber with these bumpers.

s/s finisher

can now also get the rear bumper 'finisher' in s/s, been NLA for a long time
is that a good price?

edit:
or, do you guys think that is worth it? for a piece of s/s steel just 4x20cm 'big'?
will be about $160 (that includes postage for Aus) just for this artistically curved piece of metal.

On the other hand, I have been looking for one to replace my dented piece with not much luck for nearly a year.... guess there are not many other options either

The ad states that holes are already drilled for rubber impact strips and they provide the attaching strips as well.

Oops, you're right - the ebay write-up now reads "Impact molding mounting strips in stainless steel (2 x 51121811045 and 2 x 51121811043) The picture does not show the holes drilled for the impact strips, but the bumpers are produced with the holes." But I don't think that text was there a couple days ago - the ebay write-up also used to say that these fit 1600 - 2002's, and now that wording is gone.

Actually, stainless steel mounting strips would be a big improvement over the mild steel strips supplied by BMW. It would be nice if these were available separately.

Anyone know who is having these made, and where?

My research shows these to be offered through Freinz Automotive....affiliated with "Made in China.com" I was told quote..."these were developed with the help of Ron Perry" If true than I am surprised Ron has not commented. Ebay listing shows Folsom, CA as the location. No shop per say, an internet based operation it seems.

If so, then "I pass"

frankly, for way less than this price even tatty cores can be restored
and given a concours copper/nickel/chroming and look SO much better
than any buffing a stainless surface can take and hold.

Inconsciable offering at the advertised price point and esPECIALLY
having a fair idea of the cost of "development" & production
(hint, a very small percentage of the asking price.)

Of course not, it was you son in law...

I just read there is a secret building in Shangai from where our web site is hacked and knowckoff E9 parts are designed. I am starting to worry about the Pierburg pump I just ordered from our mysterious DQ.

I do have an e-mail for the seller. My interest is that I have front tube mounts for the DOT to euro conversion in the stock and collecting dust. Send me a PM anyone who would like to pursue this further.

Coupe King has stainless strips available. No drill holes though- DIY.
