New Header from Schmiedmann

jellowbmw - have you gotten to install the new headers yet? If so, how do they fit?

Not yet. That was to be today's project, but I got wrapped up with my V70R. Installed a trailer hitch, then got stuck in the middle of installing new rear stays. Stupid corroded bolts!!!

Not yet, the coupe is still in storage for a few more weeks. It'll definitely be the first thing I do to it this spring. Engine is 3.5 with 38/38s.

OK, it's the third thing to do, after I sell the Laverda 3CL, find a BMW motorcycle replacement, and replace the RF e9 caliper that has a frozen piston.

OK, make it the fourth, as I gotta replace the RF caliper on my V70R.

Oops, i forgot about putting the summer tires on my wife's 528iT.

It's ok, we've only waited a year for this so we'll be patient!

Started install today; the after header hits the frame rail and the front header hits the block (slightly) where it mates to the tranny.

Assessing my options, and I'll take a fresh look at it tomorrow.

Well the tube for cyl 6 hits the rail and prevents the manifold from mating up fully to the cylinder head. I took a bunch of measurements this AM and figured that tube is turned out too much by at least 1/2". The fwd header is tight where it passes by the aft end of the engine block, but not a show stopper yet. It'll be tight at that aft engine block point when both are installed, and right now I can't tell how tight as I need to get the aft header installed before I can do the front.

My next move is to see if I can have the tube for cyl 6 cut and rewelded; I do not want to cut the rail.

This header is a thing of beauty, but I wonder if they ever installed one on an e9. Alt source of the problem is variation in the mfg.

This is not a product I would recommend at this time.

We'll see if the cut and weld fixes it, and in the mean time I'll look at other options.

if memory serves, Korman notes that the stahl header must be modified to fit an e9. might be wrong, but that's what i remember

Can you heat the pipe up and bend it in order to fit?

My other thought is you don't want it to be too tight as the cab could heat up and cause a whole nother set of issues.

So I contacted Schniedmann, and they said they could not do anything for me (understandable as its been 14 months), and they did not have a fix for the problem (not understandable).

I'm meeting on the way home with a local welder who does stainless welding and fab for defense products.

I saw the welder today and he's the mechanic on this not me. I gave him the requirements and let him figure out the solution.
I believe this header will work for many M30 applications with more clearence, just not the e9.
I do see that vintageBmwsource.com has a comparable header on their site, and they say they have addressed the rail clearence issue.
We'll see how much the welder can tuck in that #6cyl pipe. I'm inclined not to cut the lip of the rail, but that is an option. The rail already has one notch from the factory, so extending it would not be an issue. Just have to weld it and paint.

Saw the welder's pre-welded arrangement of tube 6, after he cut some small pie slices out of it, and it tucks in tha tube as far as it will go. Won't be as pretty as it was before, and there's some, but not much, added restriction, but it's as good as we can do with what we've got. Will post pics.

Well here's some pics of the header as finally installed. Photos don't do it justice as it is beautiful. You can see where I lengthened to the rear the existing cutout on the frame rail at the near point with the header. The mod to tube 6 isn't visible, and you'd have to examine it closely to see its been cut and welded.

But was it worth it? Here's the talley:
Purchase including shipping $348
Mods to Tube #6 $135
Weld up to existing exhaust $109
Total $592

The weld up to the existing exhaust would be required anyway, so the cost should have been $457 if the header had fit to begin with.

I'd have to say I cannot recommend this header from Schmeidmann's. If I had to do it again I'd get one from Carl Nelson, or from http://vintagebmwsource.com/.

schmiedmann on my bme e3 3.0s

hi guys,

is beautiful and very instructive to read this discussion.
In fact, I also tried to mount on my e3 headers of SCHMIEDMANN!

I also cut a piece of the right track, but I have not solved the problem!

practically makes a lot of noise because they are not close to the head!
questions!

I have to replace the gaskets that are inside the box headers schmiedmann?

shape?

or thing I can do not to lose air and avoid so much noise???

thanks look forward to your tips!!
