Nice Malaga 72 CSI on Collecting Cars

Yes they’re hard to push on. Warm them with a heat gun or hair dryer to make them a bit more pliable.

Thank you for the explanation and photos. I don't recall those on my locks when I disassembled. I better order a few.
The doors on the 2002 and the E9 have them. Some people will use a piece of clear plastic hose to cover that part of the latch. The doors really have to be slammed hard to shut without them. Steve's name of "lock buffer chiclet" is the best I've heard in almost 50 years...

And where is the best place to pick up a pair of these door latch kernels?

Walloth sells them.

Right after I bought my 2002 (back in 1983 or so) - I took to an independent BMW shop in Monterey.
Nothing too much that they had to do - but when I picked the car up after they worked on it, I noticed the drivers door was much easier to close.
I went back in and asked if they did anything to the door - The fella smiled and pulled one of these covers out of his pocket.
He noticed mine was missing, so he just replaced it.
I went to that shop for many years after (till I moved to Seattle).

The last time there I took the E38 that I received from my parents estate.
The CEL was on and... I was leaving to drive to Seattle the next day.
They hooked up the maintenance computer and figured it was the MAF sensor just a shade out of range. They could not get one in time for me - but that it woudl be ok to drive as is for now. They told me about how I could order the exact same Bosch part from a Land Rover parts house and save about 50% (back in 2007 or so) from what the BMW places would get for that same identical part (both cars used the same M62 engine - and all the goodies that went with it).

So - always had a soft spot for these little covers (and appreciated the shop that took care of me with this part as the start of that activity).
