Oil & Filter

Correction!

The Mahle OX41D does work with the PM2433 top bolt housing. It's the OX51 that is too large in diameter. My apologies for the error.

Hey I think we have the same setup!
I was just doing my first oil change in my coupe this weekend to discover the same filter housing. After a few more trips to the parts store (I think they're getting to know me quite well now..) I bought the Napa gold filter just for convenience sake. Their data shows that it filters to 10 micron. I'm not sure if it's good or bad, because most online filter tests seemed a little unreliable. I am probably going to switch to Bosch the next time..and hopefully be better prepared.

I also just switched over to Castrol GTX 20-50 after some high-ish oil consumption from my engine with thinner oil. but, I did read a pretty good writeup on oils that made sense to me:
http://sandiegobmw.wordpress.com/2008/07/11/oil-and-your-bmw-which-is-the-best/

hope this helps-

Any mineral oil 20-50 will be just fine. Not easy to find though....
I currently use Agip F1, as it is available in a nearby petrol station/garage.
I change filter every other time, as I drive so little with each car.
5L without filter change and 6L with the filter change.
Take the low? tension wire off the coil, and turn the key to "start" the engine, so as to build upp some oil pressure first. (The wire on the coil that I remove is the thin wire to the distributor).

After picking my little brothers brain this Spring (he works for a high-end, private race prep shop in Monterey which preps & maintains some amazing hardware that can be scene regularly flogged hard at vintage events across the country) on what oil to use this time around, he said they were using Valvoline VR1 racing oil, 30W, under $5p/qt at NAPA ( I special ordered it). That's what they are using now in all of their customer cars having moved from the Kendall products who 'played' with their formulas.

Considering the cars and their clients, what ever works for them I'm sure is good for me too...;-)

As stated, older engines need a higher Zinc content. As for the filter, I stock up on the MANN filter H1038s (Bav Auto)

Its from an Australian car magazine....very interesting

interesting, may be yes, but what conclusion can you take from a test that has NOTHING to do with any of the normal working conditions of an oil in an engine?

they might be testing a comparative of that oils frying them in a pan with sausages and comparing the tenderness of the resulting specimens
;-)

sorry for this joke, but is my opinion,

regards

My engine is an '83 3.3L and it has the top bolt filter. The cannister is marked PM2433 also. I have used the Mahle OX51 and the Mann HU930/3X. The Mahle OX41D (11 42 1 256 402) is shorter and larger in diameter and does not fit my cannister. I have 2 of them that I can't use. Looking at the ETK this one is used on the bottom bolt housing up thru '76 (perhaps later, but I didn't check).

I'm partial to Mahle, Mann and Hengst filters myself.

The quoted post is in error and have since found later posts that are correct. The OX41 is superseded to OX41D and fits the PM2433 canister with the bolt on top. It is the OX51 that is larger diameter and shorter. I have one now I can't use if anyone wants one. The OX41 is approx 3.25 inch dia x 5 inch long. The PM2433 canister reportedly is from an early 5 series.

KHB - Thanks for the update. I'm beginning to think I should probably go out and purchase one filter of each type and do some comparative analysis. I must say the the Purolator I just installed was not terribly impressive, it appeared to be constructed with the same material as a roll of Charmin.

The stock bottom bolt filter assembly did use a considerably larger filter. In my experience they were also housed in an aluminum jacket. The inside may have been TP but at least the overall assembly seemed decent. To change the filter you had two choices: Pull it from the bottom with the center bolt and get oil everywhere or pull it from the top by pulling the 4 block bolts and the battery and then getting oil everywhere.

Is there a remote filter mount upgrade available - one that uses a spin-on filter and mounts through a pressure line?
Bert Poliakoff sold adapters that use spin-on filters.

The post is from over 10 years ago!

Ok, so this relatively simple oil filter housing discussion became "interesting" until towards the end when the reader realized the original post was from 10 years ago. It then became a Foghorn Leghorn when seemingly out of the blue, there is a larger diameter filter at play.

Having said that, for my 74 E9 I would now like to switch out my bottom bolt on oil filter housing to a top bolt on.
Questions:
1. Purolator #2433 the correct top bolt housing (I assess it as yes)?
2. Is the housing gasket between the engine block and housing the same as for bottom bolt housing?
3. Any other parts or considerations for doing g the changeover?

FINALLY, if anyone has one that can be used please PM me.
Thanks in advance

Why not go for Bert's spin on mod? It works very well and you will retain the original top casting. image.jpg

I am not familiar with Bert's. Can you tell me how it has performed and where can I get one.

If 5 guys are interested I will do another run at $130 shipped. I can do them for 4" canister filter head or the 3.5" filter head and either top or bottom bolted. My adapters will
take a Fram PH8a filter or any other filter for a 460" Ford big block. Also on the subject of oil, Brad Penn oil is the only Pennsylvania green crude oil available as far as I am aware. It is the old Kendall oil and is very high in Zinc content. You can google them to see if there is a dealer close to you and it can also be bought on the net.filter parts (2).jpg
