Original engine?

Thank you very much for your comments. here are a couple of pictures of the engine.
We see a original CSi bracket for the air box; okay.
We see a original big vacuum booster for the brake system. Matching CSi; okay.

Your question: I’ve heard that many cars We’re registered as CS even if they were CSi, is this correct?
It also applies to my CS registered CSi. So the only thing you can check are the VIN number in the VIN list (some where on this forum). And you can check the differences special for de CSi. Just as a mentioned earlier; booster/bracket/

Chris could these parts above the fenders have been replaced with a newer model part that includes the hole, or is that not available?

I wanted also to check with the group the numbers…I assume this is a 221…but that is a wierd looking 1. Am I reading this correctly?

That isn't the original VIN numbers, where are the ones pictured located?

The original VIN is stamped on the firewall, on the right side:

I see the “RDW”. That stand for RDW the Netherlands Vehicle Authority in the mobility chain.
That wasn’t put there by the BMW in the 70s.
You could ask the owner why RDW is involved in the VIN number.

Thank you Fritzie, it’s been a bit complicated to communicate since my Dutch is almost non existent (except for google translate) and their English is also not very good. What they mentioned is that they re VINed the car when the engine was changed. The VIN is supposed to be the same that the car originally has and only the engine number changed. Where I’m now is that the car is most likely an early 3.0 CS with a swapped CSi engine. All the documents by the RDW seem to be Ok and legit by a PPi. But I’m not sure why the VIN was also re stamped.
 
Not sure what is kosher in the Netherlands but VIN swapping a car most everywhere else is a major no-no. It can lead to all manner of problems with the ultimate being a repossession (in the US). You can do what you want but if you do buy it I would seriously devalue a VIN swapped vehicle. If for nothing else, trying to sell it down the road may be extremely frustrating and potentially costly.

Reading through the thread this car sounds like what I would call a "story" car. It has some strange story why this is this and that is that. I don't necessarily dislike story cars if the story involves old-lady's driving it on sunny Sundays to Church and parked for 30 years afterwards but the car you are looking at doesn't appear to be that kind of story. Lots of part swaps, a possible VIN swap, maybe an engine swap.... To many things point to future trouble. My 2 cents...

VIN swapping was possible at least over here in Finland in the '80s, but when that was done, a car got a totally different VIN than the original VIN, but this one seems to have another BMW VIN, which is very strange and gets all the alarm bells going. I would look for another car even if it's legit in some way.
