Since I had to replace my steering column on my project I have had only one key to the ignition. That made me nervous and I attached that Pebra key to a large clunky fob. Since I'm close to being done with this Coupe and running out of tasks to do I decided to pursue getting duplicates. As most of you know the vendor in Oz land is kaput and, I thought, no one else in the USA was a source. I have a good relationship and discount with my local BMW man, Adam, and I contacted him to discuss it. He took on the challenge and after entering an order #32 32 1 102 267 and having it rejected he opened an inquiry in the system. After a couple of days of delays and contacting the Stockton CA "key room" he was told that Pebras are only processed out of the Nazareth PA "key room".
In order for them to duplicate a key from a vehicle that did not have a match between the vin and the key code I had to send them the key code (if available), an image of my driver's license, registration and/or title and a picture of both sides of the key I wanted duplicated.
I picked up the keys today and they work on the ignition. They have the black round plastic on the head but do not have a key code on them. I have put the original key away for safe storage because it does have the key code engraved on it.
I paid $61.24 with my discount for each and now have 3 keys to the ignition. My doors and trunk are original to the Coupe and a different key code so I am going to go through the same process for them so I can lock my Coupe once it's on the streets of CA.
Hope this helps for those that had the same problem.

Good idea. I pulled all the door and window cards out while the windows are being adjusted so they don't bind. Once I get those adjusted and in the up position it will be easy to pull the locks on the doors and trunk and take them to a locksmith. I'll check first with more than 1 locksmith to make sure we have the resources in the North Bay to get it done. If we don't have the resources here I may contact you for someone on SoCal that can do it.

Yes, if you are inside the doors, pull one of the door locks. The lock code is visible on the inside.

One other tidbit -- BMW made a special tool for the trunk lock. If you can locate one of those it makes removal and installation of the lock very simple.
 
Update,
Got the key code off of the arm of the door locks by using a mirror and thinking backwards. I had to look at both door locks to be sure of the number since the impressions are distorted. Called Santa Monica Lock and Safe and they verified that the code was a good one. Ordered 3 keys that will be shipped this week. Willem I tried to contact them through the website and heard from other people that had tried as well and got no response over an expanded period of time. I don't want to create any problems for them but that was my experience. Mot27cars and Chris thanks for the resources. In the long run I will probably have the ignition rekeyed so I have only one key for all of the locks but this is a good first step and chump change in comparison to my other cost for the restoration and modifications.

Yes and very good!!!
Mike has told me that if I would send my ignition cylinder and or door locks in to him that he can rekeyed them all alike as well

I would like to clarify that Keys4Classics still in business!
I wrote to Stuart and received a response over the weekend, so anyone needing keys cut accurately from codes still has a resource.
 
The best way to get a hold of Keys4Classics is by telephone I've found, I think they have a shop on the high street and they're too busy to answer emails in the day.
 
Did you re-key with only the original parts or did you require some donor locks to scavenge pins from? I need to do the same to one of my door locks, only lock that my one key does not fit.

have you thought about swapping the left + right locks? as i remember you just have to change the ends that move the lock mechanism. how many people actually use the key on the passenger side very often
 
I recently used Santa Monica lock to rekey everything for me. I am in NJ so just shipped everything to them with detailed instructions, they did a nice job.

My only disappointment was that I had just put a brand new ignition lock in and wanted to use those BMW keys as my main key. Problem is they are valet keys and too short to work in the trunk lock, so Santa Monica cut me new master keys on a generic Pebra blank.

it just depends on how picky you are / get ... since most of us fall deep into that category, its a never ending punch. then you get into fixing something and then the 'while i am in there, i should do this ...'

my example of this is i took the belt trim off to send them to speedway for polishing / ceramic coating. and then i thought i would take the car over to my painter and touch up some of the paint on the car. he then decided to paint the whole car ... then we decided to do a color change. that's a big rabbit hole that i fell into. i haven't even found the punch list yet
 
I had found the "key-men" in upstate NY who do Pebra keys but I have sent 2 emails over 3 weeks to them with no response. I called Santa Monica and they were very open to helping me. Sent photos of my key and also code for sole "bastard" lock .


Scott, you can make the punch list shorter by buying another car!. Although this can extend the restoration to infinity. Ex, Acura needs brakes, X3 needs oil changed, 328xi needs exhaust leak dealt with.......Oh, toss in 3 kids and a New England colonial over 100 years old. I would not want it any other way! I tell people I am like a shark, if I stop moving, I die!.
