Stare at your fan while engine running and temp gauge showing over 1/2

now turn off engine

how many times does it keep going around?

Will check on monday but from memory I would say 4-5 revolutions

it is a lot,
i do have a 9 blade red fan with viscous,
when i come back after a trip i always check the engine, fluids, gauges, etc, then i stop the engine
fan gives 0 revolutions, i would say that it stops immediately, maybe 15º (over 60º a full turn)

Checked the block with light and Crick 120 crack detector. Found nothing.
My exhaust coolant tester turns green though. Dont know what to make of it?
Still runs hot, but not as before. Takes longer and kond of settles around 3/4 up. Will buy a new temp sensor and see IF that is acting up.

love that tester,
have you read the instructions very carefully ?
i recall it was a bit complex,
i.e., your reservoir overspill hose is not closed, may be it will have some relevance?

My fan clutch is toast so will get a new one.

Also a new reservoir lid, I suspect it doesn't seal well

Hmm, the bottom cup is not supposed to be filled on my tester, if I understand my manual correctly. It leaves a lot to ask. Perhaps that can affect the result Also? Attaching a hose to the overspill and leading it away from the car actually improved the result a bit.

And while DQ looks for cracks his wife upstairs keeps looking for the Listerine...

Are bubbles good or bad?

bubbles are required, in essence you are suctioning the air from the reservoir, if that air contains an excess of co, the blue fluid, aka listerine turns to green,
the first portion is control, the second is the test

if the first turns green not problem, the second is the key

you need both cups with fluid to the level in my setup

Interesting, so the theory is that a cracked head allows exhaust into the coolant? I guess that makes sense as after combustion the pressure is maximal.

In retrospect I remember my Volvo 240, by the time it reached 250 kmiles on the original engine, you could see the plastic expansion tank expand with exhaust pressure...

A little update. Installed a new fan clutch and a new cap on the reservoir and Also drained all of The coolant and replaced it. However, at temp 3o clock still the fan does not stop immediately. All hoses are warm. According to my laser about 170F. Lower rad hose is 130F.
It is much better now, the temp needle went slightly over 3oclock, perhaps a millimeter or two once but nothing more.
The fan clutch kind of puzzles me though. Also my radiator do get warm so I'm fairly confident my Tstat is opening but who knows

Stuck a termometer down the reservoir today when needle was at 3/4 up, it read 96 Celsius. Does it sound True?

Remove your tstat and check and report temps

drill your tstat before reinstalling

laser test your radiator- look for cooler center.

AFAIK the needle measures coolant temperature at the engine, not coolant temperature outside the engine, be it in the radiator or the reservoir. Having said that needle at 1/2 is about 90 C I read.
96 C at the reservoir feels a bit too high if you want the engine to operate around 93 C...

You can look at this in different ways…..

measure the water temp at the tstat housing where the water exits the head.
replace the water temp sensor for new.
did you replace the tstat?
did you drill it?
did you aim it?
measure the temp of the radiator with the laser in the core- not in or out but at the center.
how old is the radiator?
did you bleed the system?
