Right Side View Mirror?

really. I don't see how to control it electronically at least. Is it too far back? Would I regret putting hood mounted mirrors on instead? I think they look uber cool while appearing to give better visibility too.

Scott- my quote and comment referred to the mirror in the German add, not your car.

Scott, if you want to order a flag mirror ... get in on M5bb's w+n order (see the post in this forum). you will only pay a small portion of the freight across the pond ... and then the minimal domestic shipping. normal w+n shipping is 49 euro. the downside is that you have to do this by tomorrow

Thanks for the info Chris. My flag mirror was replaced with the trapezoid mirror and moved from the US/NA to the Euro location!!!

I assume the trapezoid shape was the original for 03.24.72 production.

All coupes came with a trapezoid mirror except very early 2800CS in Europe which may have had a swan neck mirror based on early factory photographs.

it is interesting that Scott's '74 has a flag mirror. not saying that it couldn't have been changed by a PO ... but a '74 with a flag always makes me wonder if near the end of the run that they grabbed whatever they had lying around to finish cars. my '74 2002 had a flag mirror as did both of my '76's ... i know of 2 other '74 usa CS that have flag mirrors, and one was very original (1 owner) until a few years ago.

Scott, what is your VIN and how late in the series is it (build date)?

Scott,

There is no flag mirror in the parts book (1/76). And the flag was introduced in mid MY'75 on 2002 production run after e9 had ceased production. I had a new 74 2002 with a trap and my son's 11/74 75 2002 had its original trap mirror on the drivers door and no passenger mirror as was common at that time. As mentioned earlier, the trap has poor visibility and the flag was a vast improvement.

i know that's what the books say ... i was the 2nd owner of my '74 2002 in 1980 ... it was bone stock when i bought it, never wrecked or painted and had less than 40k miles. it had a flag mirror. just sayin ... could the books be wrong???.

i also find it strange that many '74 coupes i have seen have a flag mirror. one was a sienna in new orleans that was the original owner, never wrecked or painted (needed to be painted) ... it had a flag. a polaris '74 here in ATL has a flag, but it has been repainted. Scott's has a flag ...

Scott,

I bought my new 74 2002 in Dec 0f 74, it had a single trap. The 75 is a one owner 11/74 build date from here in HB, single trap. We had this discussion on the 02 Forum as well. My 73 e9 had a flag too but if you wanted a passenger mirror after you bought your car after a couple of years you couldn't find a trap so you bought two flags and they provided improved visibility. I don't think the books are wrong, they also include the mid-year 74 electric mirrors.

ok ... but its a whole lot of coincidences ... especially when you consider that none of those cars i mentioned had mirrors on both sides.

I think it's a case where almost everyone thought the flag not only worked better but actually looked a lot better too... my early and mostly original CSL has a flag on the driver's side only but I'm sure it wasn't delivered that way originally. Kinda like 16" wheels, lowering springs, Bilsteins, ect... I personally like the look of the flags over the traps and it will be hard to change it over even if it's correct.

got it ... but all of the cars i was talking about were bone stock - no lowering springs, no different wheels ... i get changing those things. but just changing a mirror ??? not saying it didn't happen, just very odd in my mind that it happened on so many cars.

I just saw a 67 Porsche 911 with what looked like Talbot shaped mirrors as side views. Looked pretty cool frankly....
Still torn now whether to step out and get the hood mounted mirrors. I feel like this will be my last chance to have a vehicle with those mirrors. They just seem to make good sense to me, BUT I don't want to detract from what is a gorgeous car the way it was intended to look and likely just to get another rectangular mirror for the passenger side to match the drivers side.
I have really come to appreciate this group and it knowledge and passion.
Based upon my VIN, 4310050, how can I tell what date my car was born and how deep into the life cycle it was built?

As things stand today, I am 99.9% likely to bring another poodle of mine on a road trip to SF in November to have Bill Arnold do a bunch of things to it, rather than have my Boise shop try to do same, before it is repainted this winter.

Yours is the 50th US/NA market manual tranny coupe built for the 74 MY. The build month is also on a foil sticker on the drivers door but it is not always accurate.

Scott,

You can Google BMW 2000CS to see lots of pics with the Talbot style mirrors. To me they work well with the "uniqueness" of the front end of a 2000 but not so much with a 2800CS or 3.0CS. I also think they would look especially out of place on a coupe with the big bumpers.

Just add the matching flag mirror in the same location as your drivers side.

WOW. Just googled it. I wonder why cars stopped using hood mounted side view mirrors. They just seem to make so much more sense to me.
BTW, I am replacing my BIG bumpers with refinished chrome this winter when the car gets painted. I can't wait.
Does that change your thinking?

Totally agree with DWMBMW add the matching one and stay away from mounting fender mirrors. For me I like the larger 74 electric mirror look. FWIW

Scott,

No it does not change my thinking but as Bez noted, I didn't have any mirrors because I thought it looked cleaner without any. I only added the drivers side recently for the drive to Monterey last year to avoid potential tickets in unknown states.
