Shift surround is just too small

Damn it. Replaced the linkage knuckle at the transmission end and it didnt take out enough lateral play to stop the shifter from hitting the surround.
 
I eventually ended up with a short shift kit as well as a custom shift boot. Pretty cheap to source from a local upholstery shop.
 
I have the short shifter too but I still have the shifter impacting the surround when going into reverse. CoupeKing has some of their larger surrounds coming in this week so Ill try that next. But Im confused as to why some cars have this problem but others dont.
