I went el cheapo on my shifter and lenghtened the rod under the ball to make it a short shifter, then continued in the same spirit and welded up my own DSSR.

@Stevehose and his thread already linked here, I ordered bronze bushings to replace the tired plastic/rubber bushings in the shifter + rod joint.
While they don't look like much:

They're well hidden in the car, and works very well with little slop and crisp shifts:
The UUC route is definitely easier and more elegant, but shipping and taxes killed that option for me.
