Short Shift for Getrag 5 spead

I went el cheapo on my shifter and lenghtened the rod under the ball to make it a short shifter, then continued in the same spirit and welded up my own DSSR.
Thanks to @Stevehose and his thread already linked here, I ordered bronze bushings to replace the tired plastic/rubber bushings in the shifter + rod joint.

While they don't look like much:

They're well hidden in the car, and works very well with little slop and crisp shifts:


The UUC route is definitely easier and more elegant, but shipping and taxes killed that option for me.

I am hoping to do something similar to my shifter , do you know how much you added to the distance between the ball center and the cross pin bore ?

Sorry, I just eyeballed it while doing it, don't think I ever measured it.
 
I did the same lengthened it by 5.5/8"
I was wondering how much longer it should be , below the ball.
Maybe I’m missing something here , but I don’t understand when you say 5.5/8”.
Maybe that is the total length ( maybe)
Can you please explain again

I did this on my old 02...definitely the easiest way..quick cut and weld..can't remember how much I added, but it wasn't much.

Thanks again for all the advice and recommendations.
I went old school and modified my existing gear stick .
I cut it below the ball and welded in a diameter 14mm rod which was approximately 16mm long ( 5/8” as recommended) then blended it in with the grinder and gave it a couple of coats of black paint to prevent it from rusting later on.
I then cut my linkage rod and re welded it. it is now 92mm shorter than it was originally from the factory.
I needed to shorten it so that it works with my new shift mount.
I got a good friend of mine to machine the 262 front plate so that it now works on the 265 box . So by doing that I have now managed to keep / re use my pre September 1973 front plate, bellhousing and clutch slave cylinder .
I am using the Hal boyles shift mount and I have swapped over my speedo drive from the 262 into the 265.
I have also now replaced all seals so once I put in new oil in her and swap out a few rusty bolts , she should be ready to go.
