I have a lead on a LSD from a 535is, 1985. I know this is getting close in age to LSD's that won't fit (I think) Anyhow, a friend wants the transmission to go into a 635csi (don't ask me why) but said he would split the cost of the car (750.00 each). The car is a 535i, but it had a LSD from a 535is transplanted, it's all a big dogs breakfast but I thought I would ask for the collective wikie9 opinion(s).

Thanks,

Peter

If I understand you correctly you want to put the e28 diff out of the 535 into your e9 ?

No that diff will not bolt into your car . you would need to swap up the subframe as well , and a few other pieces to make it work , I have done that conversion on two of my cars , and think its worth it , holler if you want the rest of the parts list etc

BD

Thanks, I will see what we have tomorrow and ping you for information on the possible conversion, not sure I want to go down that road but a friend found a few G265's and some rear difs and who knows what else in a local shop that's wanting to dump a bunch of stuff along with the 535i. My friend has an e24 (1988 ) so many of the parts that will work on his car won't work on ours which is good for us since he found the stash :-)

Hi BD,

I'm going down this route with mine (S54 powered) would appreciate the parts you recommend for the e28 rear subframe and LSD!
muchas gracias

^^ what he said. I originally bought 2x e24s to compare the e12-based with the e28-based 6er. The diff has totally different mounting points accompanied with a different rear subframe. Namely you can't just bolt in the new subframe as it is narrower. Further the swaybar has different mountings too.

Hi Guys ,

The e28 subframe will fit but it does require a fair amount of work to make it work . The subfarame itself will bolt right in on to the existing studs . however the e 28 subframe bushing's have a metal insert that does not fit the E9 as well as I personal like . snice all of the coversions I have done are race cars I had the hole bushing made out of Metal and the insert part was turned down to fit right into the e9
the second issue is how to bolt the rear of the diff in , I use a diff cover from an 82 or 83 e28 or e24 . the pick up point is in the center and allows you to bolt in the diff with no mods ! part # 33 11 1 210 434

the next big issue is how to bolt in the coil over style rear shock . the e9 came with the spring mounted on the trailing arm , the e28 do not have a spring perch . On the Green car I built we made shock towers from scratch , a real tedious task . I have seenwere guys cut out the e9 towers and weld in e12/28 towers that allow room for the coil over assembly. The car I am building right now I hope to do this , so follow that thread to see how it works out

The sway bar wasn't a huge deal I got an e28 bar and endlinks and welded in a two base's to mount the subframe to and bolted it all in

I have never hooked up the ebrakes but I will be in the next one so Ill post something up about that when I get to it
so for more street car based tips pay attention to my new build thread for other stuff you can find pic's in the old build thread

holler if you need more specific info

Is this based on a successful swap? I ask because I measured (not once) from center to center of the mount and there was over half an inch difference going from the E12 based E24 to the E28.

Yeah he documented it for everyone. Check out the first page of his amazing club racer build.

Thanks BD, this is extremely useful. Just for clarity which actual diff were you using? was it the e28 or something else?
cheers John

Yeah its successful , here is a picture of it in the car , Holler if you need anymore info !

One question if I may: It looks like you are also running the trailing arms that came with the newer carrier based on the fact that there is no spring seat on them. If this is correct, what are the options with springs given the different diameter of E24 to E9? Did you go for coilovers and is that the only option?

Further, with the rear trailing arm from the E24, did the wheel position change? Namely do you need a different offset?

Did you keep the E9 hubs with studs or convert to the E24 type?

Finally, did you change out the front struts for E12/E24 type?

Sorry for the barrage of questions. I am considering going to full E12/E24 running gear and have all the suspension but it would be handy to know what I am in for! Thanks in advance!

The rear shocks do make this a bit of work , the coilover create a problem . On the Green car we made new shock towers from scratch , a real pain. on my new project I'm hoping to cut out the e9 towers and weld in ones from an e12 , watch my new thread for updates .

this car is a full blown race car so we also changed the location a tad and used inverted shocks as well from MSC

here you can see the shock towers we made

To be honest I did not pay a lick of attention to weather or not wheel offset changed It is a wide body car so new wheels were used I suspect it is a tad wider ?

The fronts are a bit from here and there, the struts are MSC based of an e28 car , with a bumpsteer corrector mounted to a very modified e12/ e9 steering arm
