If the grilles are off, it's also pretty easy to mask around the 'indentation' where the grilles are installed, clean the paint thoroughly, then spray paint the indentation with flat black paint. Put grilles back in, and it looks like they are real grilles instead of fakes! Since the area is always protected, nothing is going to 'rub' the flat black paint off.

thanks for the replies. I think I'm happy with the finish. The black vinyl is applied around the whole of the bottom of the indentation, which I hope is correct.

I am only asking the question as to re-do the vinyl is trivial now, but more difficult once I have put the inner wing protection panels back in the wheel arch and sealed with u/seal.

...perhaps I should have more conviction in the quality of my work!!
