Timing covers (upper and lower) are on the front of the engine, covering the timing chain. The upper cover fixes to the head and the lower cover to the block. If the head is skimmed without the upper timing cover then the surface will have a step in it, causing issues

The compression difference is interesting. Low compression on adjacent cylinders can mean CH gasket failure

More testing, including a leak down test, required I think. This will tell you if piston rings, cyl walls, etc are indeed your problem

Hello Joe, if I may make a suggestion, I had a well known shop rebuild my engine and they put the pistons in 180 degrees off.... Terry Sayther subsequently rebuilt it and told me it was filthy inside. A good friend was with him when he did the work and confirmed that had Terry not rebuilt it it likely would have needed to be rebuilt again. The reason I mention all this is that unless you did the rebuild yourself or had a very competent friend do it you never know what may have happened; you mentioned something about the oil pump being brought to you attention as something that might need attention after the build... there's something not right about that. Also, the oil leak is just NOT a good thing. These engines should really never leak oil, so (back to my suggestion) it may be easier to just pull the engine and have a trusted "friend" (someone who knows all of us here through the forum) - I'm sure there are some in Belgium- rebuild the engine. At least you'll know where you're starting from. Best of luck too!

So... everyone, and especially the ones who were helping me, promised to give you an update on my 'blue smoke on idling' problem... So, we decided to dig into the problem and unmount piece by piece the engine untill the problem showed. Well, first to come of wat the valve cover and immediately something showed wrong... The valve stems seemed to be not completely covered by them little hoods that keep oil out. As we took off the cilinderhead, our suspicion was confirmed: something defenitely was wron with this head, valves, stems etc. So I decided to take it to a specialised company to get it overhauled. New stems, valves and valvaseats redone, in one word: completely put to new... And... It worked! No more blue smoke and the engine runs again like it should: like a baby! Pfff, car happy, me happy... I'll upload some pictures bit later!
