the "L" light

Ok, following up on this one. I swapped the alternator with an upgraded one from BNR parts. Some fittment notes if you go with them. The 250amp e9 alternator they sell is a different housing than the standard AL45x. The stock oil filter doesn’t have enough clearance for the plastic back and cables, but the e28 housing gives about 1/2” of clearance. Otherwise it fit up and works well. No more L-light.

Thank You for the follow-up. I am wrestling with the E24 forum where the younger crowd seems to not bother posting follow-up which is one of the most important aspects of any forum.

That would have been better. I suppose its not available anymore. I did give them notes on fitment for future buyers. They were pretty helpful, more than most eBay sellers.

I believe the AL41X makes a nice factory upgrade. 65 amps

this is the setup from all the 5er, 6er, 7er cars.

I too have the 85 amp alternator, but 65 would be fine unless you are planning a monster stereo. And if you are planning a monster stereo, I highly recommend you fuse and wire the stereo and amp separately from the existing wiring. The wiring in our cars was not scaled to the power requirements of even 1980s stereo units, let alone newer stuff. I know this because the prior owner of my car tapped into the left side light wiring circuit for a stereo, swapped in a 40 amp fuse for the 5 amp fuse, and melted the fuse block, wiring behind the fuse block, wiring behind both the front and rear running lights and the left tail light housing.

That's exactly where I'm headed. I've already run separate wiring to an amp under the rear seats but waited on alternator before hooking it up. Still no speakers or head unit plans so it'll be a while. Not going too monster but modest sub in the spare tire enclosure plus some non-evasive/hidden speakers, location TBD.
