I'll add another tip that hasn't quite come up yet...with internet being the resource that it can be, get to know a group of sites likely to have videos of what you contemplate doing.
A closely similar tip from one who has worked on Bimmer and beemers from 1969 through 2002 (calendar years) is to realize the BMW similarly assembles a lot of common components and systems, brakes for example, so "how it's done" on a 2002, E3,k E12, E28, E32, etc., can be zackly how it's done on a CS. THUS (and this is the point) the 2002 list or Big Coupe Group, etc., can be a useful reference.
