should read blinking.......do i need to replace the whole indicator unit in the steering column (expensive), or is there a separate (less expensive)"bit" / fix i can get ? (apols for complete lack of electrical knowledge), regards.....

Could it be as simple as one of your bulbs being out? "Fast blinking" of the instrument panel indicator is a "symptom" of a dead bulb in one of the turn signals.

You might have a short somewhere, or the indicator is connected incorrectly...

Check the 'bus bar' type connector along the back of the housing. Mine wasn't making a good connection via the rivets being loose.

You might also check the grounds. The blinkers ground behind the headlights, so the ground is somewhat exposed. You need to pull the headlight grills to access this.

I have been cleaning mine using SFdon's idea of phophoric acid on the connectors, a new screw and a dremel to clean up the hole.

Blinker relay/module might be suspect. It operates by heating and cooling. If the load is too great, like if there's a short, it might cause this. If load is too light, (like when you try to use LEDs without added resistance), they may not blink at all.

turn indicators

Never underestimate the value of correct bulbs. I traced a turn indicator malfunction, sanded and cleaned all grounds from rear signals to front, under dash as well, checked all fuse connections etc, removed turn signal housings, cleaned, sanded, improved all connections, and final fix was correct, BMW part number bulbs.
Good luck!

Lots has been written on the problem of turn signals flashing too fast (or too slow, or not at all, or ...). For some reason, e9's seem particularly temperamental about bulb wattage and resistance. All the above cures are good and worth doing. But at the end of the day, a modern electronic flasher will address the sensitivity of flash rate to load wattage.

One of the threads that discusses electronic flashers can be found at the link below. My own experience is summarized in post #12:

The slippery slope of replacing systems with modern ones one by one and when you are done you do not know if you are driving your coupe or a rental car you just got at the airport.

Post #5 in that thread should be an addendum to the Blue book and also translated to german.

Rentals are never as pretty as an E9. I really don´t think that slope is very slippery.
