Hi everyone - any suggestions how to access the crank nut without removing the fan? Trying to turn the engine so I adjust the valves. Using starter motor currently but not very precise.
thanks everyone!

To move from one cylinder to another, you can set the highest gear, if original gear box, 4th,
and you move the car frontwards by turning the front wheel

I've used a 1/2" ratchet and whatever large socket (30? 36 mm?) fits the crank nut. It's a close fit; beware slipping and running something into the radiator. Will really un-make your day.

Fun fact: the nut on the front of the crankshaft that holds the pulley on is called the "Jesus nut" b/c you say irreligious things when you try loosen it. The typical reason to remove is to replace the seal that rides in the lower timing cover, 'cause it's leaking schmutz all over the lower bits.

Pull plugs, put in neutral, put on a work glove, grab the alternator belt and rotate it clockwise. I’ve also done the 36mm socket on the nut but it’s a knuckle scraper to do so.

That's what I had to do on my AUTOMATIC-equipped 2002.

Thanks everyone for your input. I did try the alternator method but only turned a tiny bit then stopped…
Will try the i gear approach

I use this method-

Btw for those searching valve adjustment and doing for the first time be careful tightening those eccentric bolts!! They strip easily and a broken $5 nut and bolt will render your engine useless… (well that’s what happened to me and now I have to wait 4 weeks for new ones to come from Germany…). Also while you can use regular feeler gauges, those 45degree bent ones are super handy.
i had to do the adjustment a few times to get rid of the ticking sound.

I thought "no tick"= too tight.

there must be "tick"
no tick is zero, means contact, and it should be 0,25mm

torque on the nut is 10N.m, impossible to break anything, but if you do by hand...

info and details:

1st- VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT

10 N.m is the torque that should be applied to the securing nut

some details to address this,

please read carefully, ON NO ACCOUNT CHECK CLEARANCES BETWEEN ROCKER ARM SLIDE PADS AND THE LOBES OF THE CAMSHAFT

i can put a set of original BMW nuts in your house in 4 days with UPS, shipping cost is expensive, though...

Thanks Dequincey
The bolts arrive from bmw next week so I should be Up and running again soon. The ticking sound on my engine has got progressively worse over the last year eve with an oil change So I thought a valve adjustment might help. It has somewhat until I stripped the bolt!
Good advice re not adjust between rocker and cam. I did see a yubtub video of someone doing that

btw - how is your engine bay sooooo clean??!!

FYI For those in vancouver, parts from Brian Jessel are half the price than bmw vancouver… identical parts
