The wheels on this picture are very very special.
They are early production 7x14 Mahle Basketweaves, made in very limited number.
These were almost prototypes, although they were occasionnally advertised for sale to the public (GS-Tuning advertisements).
If you look closely you will notice that they have a unique design, which was abandonned in September 73.
I know only 3 surviving sets (all three in the hands of current or passed members of this forum !).
BMW used these early Mahle wheels on three cars :
M-YM313, M-YM709 and M-AW544.
Re M-AW544 : it was an early injected CSL, which they used for testing the aerodynamic kit and for testing different configurations of Motorsport stripes. It was the car they used for the homologation of the aerodynamic kit with the FIA.
There are pictures of this car driven by HJ Stück or posing near the newly winged race cars at Diepholtz (DRM race on July 15th).
