I've got a gas smell issue in my 1970 2800CS. The gaskets on the two gauge senders I have are pretty hard and now that I've got fuel back in the tank, the garage smells.

Does anyone have a source or the specs for the size of the O ring so I can buy one locally? I'm assuming it's an O ring though both of mine look pretty rectangular at this point after years of being installed. Thanks.

Yes, it's an O ring. I don't know its size, but you could get the large diameter by measuring the groove in the sender. The smaller diameter might be harder to determine precisely; I'd guess ~1/8" = 3 or 4 mm.

part number 16111744369
diameter 58.8 x 4.2
its still available $6.15 from getbmwparts.com / msrp from BMW is only 7.28 so its not worth paying shipping ... call your local dealer
That's amazing. I wouldn't have guessed that the same dimensions would carry over through the generations to the present. But I guess if it's not broken, don't fix it.

Thanks

I have the O ring in hand now as the dealer got it in stock overnight and was only a short detour from our trip to Costco. Unfortunately, their MSRP wasn't the $7.28 reported by getbmwparts.com but was $13.24. Tax brought the total to $14.23, still the cheapest OEM BMW part I'll ever buy from a dealer.
Hopefully this will reduce/prevent the gas smell in my trunk.

Hi. I need one of these as well. I want to be sure I am getting the right part, Is the seal you bought the one that seals up the fuel sending unit to the tank per this pic? Thanks so much!

the seal with the part number i listed above is the oval ring that fits around the sender, which mounts onto the pump unit. the seal for the pump unit is different. i know i have one, but i don't find a part number on realoem for the coupe ... probably because its a lower pressure situation.

on the e12, it uses 16121116966 which is also used on the e24, e28 ... and they all use the similar pump unit.

that is the suction seal on the CSi tank ... that is why i asked what kind of tank he has ... he asked about the seal on a CS, but said he had a CSi (so that is why i asked the question). this does NOT fit on a CS tank with the e28 type pump

Hi. Thanks Scott and Boonies. My car is now a CSI with a 3.5L M90B34. I dont know what kind of fuel tank Paul used. Looking at the drawing (thanks for sharing), I think its the drawing on the right and part number 8? And may as well get the part 6 washers as well. Do I have this right?

look at the tank and see if there are 2 devices or 1. the part number #8 or #3 (depending on year) is ONLY for a CSi tank. the correct way to put it is that it is now an "injected CS", as a true CSi is a 226xxxx car or a 434xxxx car. the typical way of adding a 3.5L to a CS is to keep the CS tank and use the newer style in-tank pump + sender as a single unit. that uses the gasket part number i have listed above.
