WTB: Ivory early model (1970 2800 CS) speedometer

Did you have a speedo shop try to repair it?
Can't say I have. I have a full spare instrument cluster I borrowed parts from. I then bench tested the speedo and it wound up some MPH's so I thought it was fine. If anyone here doesn't have a spare speedo cluster, I'll try a shop.

Might want to provide the numbers on the back of your speedo to make sure you get the right one. If the speed wasn’t correct then also the diff ratio.

True. There was also noise coming from the back of the cluster and the needle was sticking so it’s definitely defective.

Here’s the cluster from my car.

you might want to look at @HB Chris FAQ on diffs + speedos - it defines the different gear ratios for mph / kmph dependent on which diff is used.

as the FAQ shows w1.14 for a US 2800cs ... which agrees with the back of your speedo. i would highly recommend having a speedo shop (refer to the FAQ - best sources) and have it cleaned and rebuilt - likely has a broken gear.

Thank you for the info. I recall seeing that somewhere and have been spacing it; lots on my plate, car wise. Gears are brand new and I verified their function last night after pulling it out to bench test. Odo and trip work excellent. I'm not quite sure what to call it but I noticed the transmission looking item doesn't sit flush on the plate. I have a feeling this is causing an issue. I could have damaged something inside as well. I've tried everything to make it sit flush with no luck. I wouldn't mind buying a cluster and replacing the gears as that's pretty simple and straight forward.

what is up with the gear on the right? looks quite mangled ... been a while since i looked at mine taken apart. i have a 2800cs spare but as i remember it is a KmPH speedo - i will check to be sure. i do have a few 3.0cs speedos, but you would have to get the gear correct and swap the faceplates to the ivory numbers

Ah, what you’re looking at is a bit too much gear grease. I wasn’t sure if it needed grease. I kind of put too much. The gears themselves are in excellent shape under the grease.

Please let me know if the 2800cs ivory is in MPH. I don’t feel confident enough taking off the face plate. I tried to remove the needle on my spare with no luck. I thought I was going to damage too many items.

I had the speedo shop replace the faceplate on my 2800CS with an Ivory one from another speedo. I have checked my stock and don't have a W1.14. I also didn't feel comfortable changing the facceplate.

Gears drive odometer first and then to the speedo which is controlled by magnets which is why a speedo shop can often solve this problem.
Hello Chris, does the uneven transmission against the base plate look odd to you? I’ve never taken one of these apart so I’m in unfamiliar territory. I feel like it should be flat and even.

With the odometer building miles just fine (with new gears) when testing in the garage, does that say anything to you by chance?

I’ve contacted Todd at the speedo shop.

I didn't know face plates also came in ivory. Mine is a fairly early 70 2800CS (VIN 2270065) and the face plate is black. I may have a spare speedometer, but I don't know if it is for a 2800CS, and I am pretty sure the face plate is black on it also. I will look for it to make sure.

I know they can be regeared. I had mine calibrated (regeared) many years ago when I put larger tires on the car. It has been very accurate since then.

The numbers and I believe the needle are ivory on the earlier E9s.

My apologies on the verbiage. Yes, you’re correct that the face plate is black but the lettering/numbering is a different hue of white from early to late model.

Thank you and feel free to send me a PM when you get a chance! I appreciate it.
