I see a lot of old posts about which year Getrag 265 is needed for the conversion to e9, but in my case I would be going from 4 to 5 speed not from automatic.

So do I still need to look for a '80-'81 528 or '82 528e with mechanical speedo drive attachment or will later ones work because I can use the speedo parts from my 4 speed (I read that 4 and 5 speed speedometer drive parts are the same)? If so, which additional years are applicable in my case? Or is there a cutoff where the casting is changed and no drive parts will work?

Any one have a nice quiet low mile 265 available?

I'd consider rebuilding one in my spare time but due to the tools required (I don't have a 15 ton press lying around) and cost of the innards that looks impossible unless DeQuincey somehow does a tutorial

TIA

You still need the same transmission. The only other trans that will work is the 265 from a 1985 535i. The ‘85 535 and the ‘82 528e versions both need the speedo gears added. If you get one from a 528e you will also need to change the bellhousing.

you can use the Getrag 265 out of any of the cars it came in . . even one that has no speedo drive.
You'll need all the pieces from your Getrag 4 speed for the speedo drive, along with a new rear output shaft seal. This gearbox also came in the E30 M3, and various e24 chassis. While you're replacing speedo drive parts, reseal the input shaft and front cover.

A note on the speedo drive . . some of the 265s seem to stack up differently, and the speedometer gear on the out put shaft can spin freely. Check the stack up measurements during assembly / disassembly. We have needed to make a spacer collar in several instances.

Don't forget to replace the internal o-ring in the collar that supports the speedo drive shaft that gets inserted into the gearbox.

I'm going to do this conversion too with my E12 which has a 4 speed now.

Is putting the speedo drive from the 4 speed into the 5 speed a simple job?

Here is one in Colorado

I know Dave and he is agood guy, retired BMW mechanic, only liked working on the old stuff. He has a stack of these transmissions, he might have the right speedo gear output to work with the rear diff ratio you have/want.

He also has lots of other stuff he should sell... Lots and lots.

Steve just wondering if you have considered the close ratio dogleg gearbox? I would be interested to hear what life is like with one from someone who has driven an E9 with both

No I want the overdrive for highway cruising. I can get to Starbucks on the 4 gears I have just fine :-P

I'm in the process of stealing the speedo gear from one Getrag 265/6 overdrive transmission to put into another.
I have removed the flange nut and the bolts from the rear trans "cone " but the cone doesn't want to separate "lift up" from the adjacent gearbox section. I have gently pryed and hammer tapped using a piece of oak to cushion the cone flanges.... but so far only a very slight gap, about .020" between the casings is visible.
Am I missing something? What is the best approach?

dont take your tranny apart for the gear…
long screwdriver behind gear, dead blow hammer, spin
shaft, repeat.

thanks for your quick reply Don! But you replied so fast there is smoke now coming from my internet connection!

I'm all for not taking the tranny apart for the gear... Sorry but I'm not following "long screwdriver behind gear, dead blow hammer, spin shaft, repeat"

The blue shop manual states within context of 262 4spd trans on page 23-00/8 "Pull off speedometer pinion and washer.
I'm working with two 265/6 transmissions.

With this one removed from the gearbox:

Take a look into the hole on the gearbox where it came out, further in you'll see the worm gear on the output shaft.
I suspect this is where the long screwdriver comes into play as Don explained, put the screwdriver into the hole behind the worm gear to add tension and hit the end of the output shaft with a hammer once, then rotate the shaft and again, and again, it should pop out if you have the nut and flange + seal removed from the output shaft.

You need the shim as well.
No need to split the case of the gearbox.

Thanks Robert for the additional clarification. I appreciate it!

Will try later today.

174k, if you are just trying to get the speedo drive out, I did mine a couple of weeks ago.
There is a small bolt in the side, remove that.
Then it is held in by friction from the large O ring (approx 16 mm diameter), so use a smaller flat screw driver to lever through the hole which the bolt goes into. Mine just came out when I did that.
Splitting it to change the speedo drive seal is a different game.
For that, a punch down the centre just works. Then to reassemble I used a sash clamp as a press, with a small and a large socket as a seal installer and spacer, one on each end. Sorry no photo’s.

Completed!
successfully removed pinion and spacer and installed in other trans.
I found heating the seal housing with heat gun made removing output seal easier.
