Gratuitous Marchal porn, the high beams are yellow bulbs as are the driving lights (obviously). Easy on the eyes at night.

Looking for a set of Marchal 700/720s like these in clear glass. May buy these anyway and change it up a bit.

I bought my Hella's from Susquehana Motor Sports. Included were neccesary relays and a simple wiring diagram so that on hi beam, all six filaments will light. Took a few hours to build a new wiring loom.
per Daniel:
Hi, Scott. A few things:

1. That "clever" modification to have all six filaments lit
on high beam is a definite *don't* . Two-filament headlight
bulbs (such as the ones in your outboard, high/low beam
headlamps) are pressurized to about 10 atmospheres when
cold. Their internal pressure goes very much higher than
that when they're hot (lit).
They are not designed to handle the heat or the electric
current on the common filament support lead that results
from running both filaments at the same time for more than
very brief periods during beam changeover (high to low beam
or low to high beam) or during headlight flashing to signal
other drivers. Prolonged operation of both filaments at the
same time carries the very real risk of the bulb grenading
inside the headlamp, destroying both parts. Running the low
and high beam together can only be done safely if the lows
are produced by different bulbs than the highs.

Moreover, even if this modification could safely be done, it
would _not_ improve your high beam seeing. You'd have more
light coming out of the outboard headlamps, that is true,
but the extra light would be heavily weighted towards the
foreground, that is the road surface close to the car, which
works _against_ your ability to see what you need to see
(far down the road) when you're in high-beam driving conditions.

2. Lamp aim is by far the main thing that determines how
well you can (or can't) see at night with any given set of
lamps, so no matter what, you will need to see to it that
the lamps are aimed carefully and correctly with an optical
aiming machine. Low beams per the "VOL" instructions and
high beams per the "VO" instructions at
http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/aim/aim.html . Note
that every headlamp producing both a high and a low beam is
aimed on its low beam setting.

You guys DRIVE at NIGHT?

This is crazy. There must be a law. Tell me it isn't real. Where would you go? What does your wife say? Does she know?

I have an old set of high beams scrounged from a Benz, halogen with yellow lenses. Despite the halogen bulb, they are dim enough by comparison to other cars, that no one can tell I have my high beams on. Wonder what voltage they're getting...

Bert, With standard H4 lo beam, when hi beam is on the 55w lo filament goes out and 60w hi is on, not both. 115w would be very hot in one lamp. Euro coupes use H1 for both lo and hi, which is why the US stalk has to be modified to illuminate lo beam when hi is selected.

Hey Chris and all., I don't know things to the degree many of you do. As I said, Susquehana sent the diagram out when I bought the lights and lenses. On an early 635 euro, there are 4 circuits for the headlights. One for the left side hi and 1 for the lows, same on the right. What we did was to tie the lows together for both sides, and the same with the hi's. Each circuit has a 20 amp fuse and then route through relays, again for both circuits. They then route through 30 amp circuit breakers, then to the lights them selves. The new harness from the fuse box on was built with overkill 12 gauge stranded wire. A stock 635 stalk was used, and testing with the battery showed the entire set up to work as planned. After all this, I have to think that Susquehana would not send out information that could be dangerous. However, once the car is on the road, I will find out one way or the other.

My euro 6, all matching numbers, has been under a 9 year nut and bolt restoration. Today it left my garage on a flat bed to a local fellow hobbyist who has a strong national presence as an early car guru. With in a months time the car should be filled with fluids and all the bogeys sorted and running as desired. From there it will be all cosmetics on the inside and some trim on the outside, all of which is either new or restored and waiting to to be installed.

I will finally find out how my local engine builder did along with the mods done in addition to in my garage Hopefully I will have a 250 + hp M90 with a dog leg and lsd 3.07. And hopefully the obscene amount of money I have spent will prove well worth it.

She whose name must not be mentioned was actually smiling as the car left and immediately had a broom in my hands. I found parts I didn't know I had!!

It may even prove to give me a good comfort level and maybe I will turn up for some west coast gatherings and meet some of you face to face after many years of hanging around here. Most of the e24 forums are pretty much filled with younger guys and life is much more interesting and helpful with the people here. Nothing wrong with newbies and we were all there once, but still more advanced help and conversation is nice to have.

Any thoughts about domed vs flat lenses. What did the cars come with from factory? What do you prefer?

US cars came with domed lenses ... because they came with sealed beams. i can't speak to what euro cars came with because i never saw them back in the day. i have flat ones in my coupe right now ... i got the lights from Korman years ago - didn't specify flat or domed ... they came flat and i put them in

I believe euro coupes came with flat Hellas or another brand.

That makes sense to me. I need to stick with flat H1's if I want my healdlight wipers to function properly (which is of course very important :D). They won't work with domed lenses. Also with H4's, the lense sticks out too far from the retainer, which holds the wiper stop.
