For those who have read about the difficulties of extracting these babies from the transmission, before you go and rig up something elaborate, try taking the easy route. I wrapped some electrical tape around the jaws of a channel locks plyers and mine pulled right out with only a moderate amount of effort.
And for removing the round gear it’s a screwdriver behind the gear for tension and sharp blows to the output shaft.

Nope. Too skinny. I know; I bought a couple from a Getrag 242 to put in a 265.
According to RealOEM it fits all of these cars, even 265/5 and 265/6 and even some automatics.

The mystery is solved, there are two different adapters as BMW calls them.
