Yeah, as he noted above, Drew tried this and it didn't work.
Another possibility I thought about is within the Alpina setup that Daddywad sells. Given where the Alpina airbox sits, I think there is a set of almost 90degree airhorns underneath the airbox (This would make both manufacturing of the airbox and its installation much easier). If those are separate parts, they might be an alternative if they could be bought on a stand-alone basis. @daddywad - comments?

@halboyles : Looks great - does it also fit the later M30B35 from the E34/E32? I am planning to modify my M30B35 based B11/3 engine with VGS ITBs soon and will than have the same issue. Would love to solve it using your spacer. Can we manage shipment to good old Germany?

I am not in the business of reproducing the Alpina B2/S carburetor kit.
I just took the picture from my collection of parts pics

I am more a fan of the VGS solution; actually thinking about a possibility to reproduce their airbox... And the 300° Schleicher camshaft.
But I do not have the time to take care about that at the moment. And do not know if there would be interest in these parts.

Viktor Günther (VGS) from the Cologne area in Germany, was the sole importer of Weber carburettors in the 1960s and is up to this day the prime address when it comes to this type of equipment. They devised back then several type of intake manifolds for various makes of cars/engines, one of them being for the BMW M30. Their manifold has the following features
- The curvature of the intake results in a longer tract which I have been told (I am not a mechanic) allows for a better filling of the chamber at lower RPM and so a higher torque.
- The repositioning of the Webers allows keeping the original brake booster
- A spacer between the cylinder head and thermostat housing is not needed anymore.

Interesting thread and as an early E9 racer 'dork', I've been collecting early team car info/images for years and I'd liked to pick the knowledgeable E9 hive mind here. 
In my hunt for info/pics on the '73 Targa Florio CSL tuned by GS Tuning, I found a couple motor pics of said car in its current state. Similar to the early Alpina team's 2800CS racer (circa 1970), it appears that GS Tuning also implemented the modified trumpet (my son named it the 'stank leg', lol!) addressing the stock booster clearance issue. I used this solution in my '70 SPA tribute's new motor (basically a B2S) and it works well for me. Also appears the early teams relocated the battery, mine's in the trunk now, not sure where the early teams put it.
I'm curious to know when the early tuners started making the new manifolds and airboxes for the 3x Weber set-ups? Guessing starting around '73-74?
I may have asked this before, anyone know what happened to the Targa CSL? I think it reappeared recently hence the found motor pics. I don't recall where I found them, but have a couple interior pics too.
As always, thankful for any and all info/wisdom shared. If I ever make it over the pond, I see a pilgrimage visiting the early tuners.

I think the Muskeltiere article was published in AMS in 1972 and the GS test car already had that trumpet setup, right? But honestly, I would need to into my car literature collection to make sure... Getting older

It looks like a wedge was just welded into one of the trumpets. You can see the weld inside. I guess about 15 degrees...
I still think about going this route after Steve did his long ago. So nice. Anyone have luck finding that VGS manifold ?? Ive had a Google alert going for years with no luck.

I bought this recently on Ebay through a heads up by member Lucas who knew the seller personally. I just actually received yesterday and still have not opened the box but looks in good shape and shouldn't be damaged. I can update later, I don't think the seller has another unfortunately. I was able to get it for considerably less including more than half of what he was asking for shipping. Fedex just billed me $8 for the tariffs etc. so no big deal there.
I'd obviously be interested in the cold air intake box if one is available or more likely if anyone makes one.

Got one in my parts collection and thought about a repro run. Depends a bit on what I will use for the ITBs that I am planning to install on my own car...
As everything related to hobby in my life, would be sort of a longterm activity
While it looks cool, it definitely muffles the intake music, and I found it makes warm starts difficult because vapors get trapped in the box. You'll also need to rig up a CSi style mount for the filter box. I made one out of 1/4" aluminum plate that bolts to the old a/c muffler bolt holes. I usually run foam filters but occasionly put the rig back on for a change because I love having the complete setup.
