My BMW journey has begun

i have found that while they are helpful to know where the ends are, the route they take thru the car has little to do with the diagrams. what crosses under the dash, what crosses in front of the seats ... then there is the question of how something gets from the starter / ignition switch to the coil.
 
I just removed my EGR valve. Will I also be removing these as well

I'm not sure what this is called but it appears to be a vacuum switch that is electrically controlled. Unfortunately for me it runs between the ERG and the back side of my distributor. This just went over my head

no idea ... i just know that nothing like this is on my car ... but not much emissions control stuff was on the 1971 and none of it remained when i bought the car.
 
first a question - with the webers, is any of the egr / vacuum lines / control valve actually connected to anything? or just itself with the black vacuum line going to the distributor? what if you just remove everything and plug the black vacuum line at the distributor? (the one that went to the magnetic valve). just leave the one vacuum line from the distributor to the carbs.

bottom line, no way to connect to the header, the egr valve probably doesn't work anymore, no connections to the webers ...
somebody who knows more about this than me might be able to chime in if i'm steering you badly ... but i know none of that is on most cars
 
I just ordered some vacuum line caps so with the engine running I can unplug things one at a time. My initial thoughts are that most lines are either attached to the intake manifolds or to the base of the carbs.
 
Remove all of it and the silver box below the coil known as speed relay, no longer needed, just cap any unused vacuum ports on the Webers too. It controlled vacuum advance and retard. Just run advance from dizzy to Weber above the throttle plate.
 
I searched the forum and in an older post it said to remove both. All the emission controls have been removed. I have plugged the intake manifolds where the EGR tubes attached with two M12-1.5 oil pan bolts. At the exhaust end of the EGR I'm going to use the existing nut with a dime as the seal.

I did a “geographic” wiring diagram showing the bundles leading to particular locations in the car. I’ll dig that up and post it
