CSL with a vertically mounted engine?

This summary of 70s and 80s BMW engine development is quite interesting:


There's a statement which caught my attention:

"For the 1976 season, the oil crisis was a few years back and BMW decided to enter the newly created group 5 series. By request of the factory, Josef Schnitzer further developed the M49 engine so it could be used for vertical installation in the CSL's engine bay. Vertical installation allowed the use of larger exhaust headers, a more optimized inlet system and the installation of a more efficient cooling system.

This engine was named M49/3 and yielded 465hp @ 8500RPM. But compared top the Porsche 935 turbo, the E9 CSL with the atmospheric M49/3 engine did not have a chance to compete. That is why in a later stage, twin turbo chargers where added. This was the fifth evolution of the M49 engine and was called M49/4.

The four-valve M49/4 engine allowed a relatively low turbo pressure. Usually, a boost of 1.3bar was used to yield a neat 750hp @ 9000RPM. This high power output came with a relatively high reliability of the engine. Although the CSL gearbox was not designed for such a power, it held up rather well during the races."

I always thought the M30 engines were tilted about 20-30deg to the passenger side in order to provide clearance for the hood. The vertical height of the commercial M30 oil pan & oil pump could potentially introduce clearance issues on the bottom side, but with a low-profile, dry sump oil pan for racing.. the overall vertical engine profile is reduced by several inches.

Out of curiosity.. does anyone have a historical photo of the vertically-mounted CSL engine? That's an interesting piece of history.

the engine in the racing cars was vertical. i saw that on the factory racing cars at amelia island. don't have a picture that i can put my hands on quickly ... but it took me by surprise as i had no idea

I've extracted and attached relevant photos (photo credit to hushypushy, watermarks were not altered). Very very interesting stuff.
  • The distributor was moved to the side and connected via belt drive.
  • Alternator mounted in trunk and attached to rear axle.
  • Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection.
  • Smaller oil pan .. looks like a dry sump setup.
  • Very different exhaust headers (compared to street variants)
  • Looks like an early version of DOHC (note sparkplug location). Coolant hose directly feeds valve cover.

Wish there was a photo of the bell housing.. that would be interesting...

I kept wondering what the black intake manifold element was.. between the head and the bronze-colored trumpets with mechanical fuel injectors... the ITB's are slide variants, not rotating variants like traditional ITB's (ex: S38B35). Watch the video.

It seems like that swaybar is very similar to the one I posted here:
Adjustable swaybars
- it seems like the adjustable ends are not linked in the foto? I think in such setting it should be linked to the struts?
- nice to see how it is mounted to the frame here - does anyone know where to buy that linkage parts (did not see them on the Vink page before)?
- I only know adjustable swaybars with that many linkage positions for the rear - do we know which manufacturer made that swaybar?

Drysump oilpump:
Seems to be a more modern oilpump that is installed on the right side of the engine - it does not look like the 3-stage pump from the FIA homologation papers?
 
the belt driven pump on the rear diff is for cooling the diff fluid. It's not the oil pump.
And we know that there is a road-going BMW derivative from that "period" that used a similar construction for diff cooling; it is also the only road-going BMW I know that uses a pump and diff cooler: the Alpina B7. As the first series still used the sideloader, we would be able to adopt the B7 solution to our E9s, but to find a set today is like having 6 correct numbers plus "Zusatzzahl" in the German lottery... I think Christoph has a set but not sure if he ever installed it.
