Well, unless I have a nervous breakdown (which is still possible) I should be painting the first round of parts tomorrow. Hood/trunk/doors.. I ended up making the garage into an airtight 'Dexter' room...plastic on the outside with filters at the bottom to control where the air comes in. Turned on the big exhaust fan and it's definitely creating some serious suction and the plastic is sucked tight to the door.(it was off in this pic). Yes! Opening the door into the house caused a huge surge of cold air to leave the living space..maybe I'll do that again in the morning to make sure it's nice and cool. Air is low to the ground and I'll wet the floor before I spray... Plan is to shoot very early in the morning while the temp is around 70ºF... Very nervous.

Well, that's the first group of pieces. It didn't lay down quite as well as I'd hoped, but I'll have no problem wet sanding/buffing it smooth. Such a small space to shoot in...but happy to have color going down! Just have to clear this stuff out of the garage to shoot the body..can't wait till this part is over. I hate paint/bodywork...a lot.
Congrats! You are in a pretty exclusive club by personally taking on the body work and painting of a show quality car. I like your fixtures to hold the doors and lids.
Thanks! Show quality will depend on my wet sanding/buffing skills…thankfully, I think I’m okay there..lol. I did an enormous amount of prep work..the body was quite smooth before shooting..hopefully after sanding it’ll still be the case..I have huge respect for the guys that can spray out glassy finishes right off the gun. True art form that I have just not been able to master..
I had extra steel from other work and figured the stands would be really helpful in the small space..they have proven themselves invaluable! I’ll cut them apart and repurpose the steel when I’m done. I will need to roll them outside to do the body..which will have to be in a day or two..work calls…:-/.
She has color!! Body laid down waay better. Some 2000 wet and a buff and it’ll be good..saves a little elbow soreness..tiny bit of cleanup in the garage..I have a very understanding wife..

Almost done sanding the driver’s side of the car. Just have the drivers side back door to do..pic of the driver door. Looks great in pics, looks pretty good in person. I’m just losing the desire to finish paint/bodywork... It’s zero fun..especially when it doesn’t end up perfect. I imagine it’ll be a really nice driver, but not so nice I’m scared to drive it.

I did like my door stands...ended up being quite handy in my limited space...

The gaps are sooo tough to get right. I’ll probably wait until I get it on its wheels to really fiddle with it too much, as I imagine it’ll settle a bit when it’s off the cradle. I want to be done with sanding and buffing asap. I’m going to sand and respray the trunk and hood as I just don’t like the finish..sucks, but better to just get it done better.
I’m lucky the garage is JUST wide enough to spin the car around... Time to get the passenger side doors on. I also degreased and power washed the underside..cleaned up amazingly well. Excited about installing the subframes one day and it being nice and clean...
I also dyed my carpets charcoal/black. That’ll save a few bucks for fun stuff. Used RIT dye more or something like that..for synthetic fibers.

I’ve been debating that. It’s not really a strict resto build..plenty of reused parts…it’s def not show quality..besides, I don’t like the word resto being used so much anyway..a true restoration is a massively expensive, technical undertaking that would result in a brand new car..I’m very far from that. I call this a thorough refresh...
Back to the wheel wells..I like the idea of body color, but won’t it just get torn up quickly? I’m doing them black undercoat to start, but it’s paintable.. I might do the underside in a gray chip guard to look more correct.. would that make sense or is that dumb?
Oh, question. The gas tank and the spare tire well. What color are they? I feel like a usually see them black, but that doesn’t seem correct..well, the tank seems correct as black..
