1970 2800CS restoration - in preliminary stage

Also replaced the front calipers and rubber hoses.

The second set of brake pads I ordered turned out to be wrong as well. These were way too thick… like 19mm. Better than the last ones which I have no idea what they actually went to.

Old pads went back in but they are Uber thin. Replaced the rear wheel cylinders... Waiting on shoes and a few other things from Germany.

Cleaned some of the interior before I started this morning. Was so filthy I couldn’t stand to work in there until I did. Dude must have been a heavy smoker. Nasty.

Most of you have seen the pics On BAT. There is a lots of good hardware in the interior. A good amount of it will cleanup. Some… not so much.

I will admit I missed the condition of the windshield in the auction pictures… it’s toast. Delaminating.

Okay... you can tell I'm bored and waiting for parts to arrive.

Worked on a couple of nit picky things... fixed the interior light. So everything in there now works... except the clock. It's still 3:17 all day.

For no reason at all I decided to buff out the crap paint and polish some of the crome / trim.

Paint is still a turd but slightly shiny turd.

So I was very excited today... finally got the package from Germany.

Unfortunately it showed up a little mangled.

Since I have no experience here I have no idea ... but doesn't seem right to me.

I did start ripping things down prior to that.

Not terrible. One broken stud on one manifold. I remember this from long ago... those two underneath bolts at the rear of each manifold... so much fun.

Everything cleaned up nice. Changed out the gaskets while I was in there.

Was a nice day today so as I pondered the exhaust... took the other German out for a bath. My fault... took it out in the rain last week.

I already have an email into W&N. It was shipped UPS so I’m sure they will cover it.

Shame… such nice parts… really well manufactured.

Hey at least I can put the shoes on and have brakes now.

While Steve is right that the muffler is toast, but I would try to sell it if the insurance company doesn't require you to send it back to them. Somebody that knows how to weld may be able to replace that muffler with a Magnaflow unit while retaining the final overall dimensions.

Thanks for the tip on switches guys.

Fixed both the hazard and defrost switch today while I was fixing the turn signals.

Also. Did the fix on the hazards I found on the site as well. Picture is of in progress. I wrapped everything up nicely….Not as fancy as some of the fixes some of you did but it's what I had on hand.
Can you send me pictures of of how you hooked up the wires for the defrost. I put a new switch in and my rear defroster still does not work. I am not sure I hooked it up correctly

So the goal was really to get it to a point to make assessments. Well we’re are at the assessment stage now.

Engine - great - really strong pulls great... still more maintenance parts to be changed. hoses etc.
Carbs - gunky but functioning well despite - auto choke works
Brakes - still a work in progress - booster needs attention. Very hard pedal and no real braking.
Driveshaft - carrier bearing. Lovely thump thump at 20 mph
Suspension and steering - not terrible thus far. Power steering is good.
Electrics - I would say pretty darn good considering - biggest thing right now is the windows - mechanical and electrical - some motors trying to work but crap is so gummed up they won’t move freely Or without serious help
A/C - shot - lines were literally breaking off in my hands, pump frozen. Doesn’t matter will replace with more modern stuff.
Body - well… still bad but surprised me that it’s not worse. Both doors need reskinned, rockers are pretty toasty. Floors are rusted through in places. Some supports pretty rusted. Trunk is okay. Everything is surface rusty. Won’t know more until it gets blasted. Gonna try that dustless blasting. There’s a dude in my area.
Interior - well ugh - wood is shot - seats are solid, all the trim is there and most will clean up just fine. The GOOD - unmolested. Not hacked up. Hey… the radio works - speaker does not. It’s all Getting replaced or Renewed anyway.

Still going to have to sit for a while until restoration but right now its out in the driveway.

Good News is that the new garage is being started in 3 weeks. Weather has been pretty great this winter here. Bad news… there’s an MGC that needs to get done before said E9.

How work dustless blasting.
Have you got a pic for use.

Hope your rust isn't too worse.

Breiti

Well this is the strangest thing ever.

So I have been corresponding with W&N concerning the exhaust system situation. First off let me say that they have been extremely helpful and very responsive. Over and above good service which is rare these days.

Apparently, this is how the center silencer is supposed to be .... that dent in on purpose. I mean it did look a little purposeful but with the condition of the packaging I just assumed it was a problem.

Again... seems peculiar to me but okay I guess so. The rep even sent me a picture of one from their inventory (attached).

Just an FYI for those of you that do purchase this system. It is on the top of the piece so it does not exactly show.

i thought the 'strategic dents' were only in the rear muffler behind the diff. i do not remember seeing them in the center resonator. i just looked up pics of the system on Fritz's Bits - NO strategic dents ... but now that i think about it, that's the underside of the resonator. mine isn't here at the house to go look at - anybody else have 'strategic dents'?
