It was cracked to small bits. I’ll look for another one.

No, wrong. That gasket is still there. I missed that when things were being set aside. Lots of other black debris.

There’s some pitting, so more than surface deep, but still workable.

DMV rejected my first blue plate submission (original plates on the car, but ineligible for four years because the car had been in a lien sale), so I sent these in, and the second time was a charm.

Looks great. You don’t have to use that tab if you don’t want to, just stick the current year on the plate. Interesting about the lien restriction.
Thanks. Yeah, I thought about doing that, but I spent $21.95 on that sexy 1974 sticker. I didn’t want to cover it up. So I thought I’d try the aluminum tab they sent me, and I actually like the way it looks. It’s just interesting.

I’m keeping the original plate of course, in case I get a bee in my bonnet in 2024 about putting it back on the car.

Thanks. The paint was inconsistent. Mismatched on various panels, from repairs. Granatrot seems to be tough to match/blend. Also, the plastic surgery of the bumper conversion. And lastly, a Santa Cruz tweeker on a scooter hit the right fender coming off a sidewalk into the intersection I was crossing, and flew over the hood, denting the fender and scratching the hood. I think he also broke some bones, but I wasn’t paying too much attention to that. The cops gave him a ticket, and asked if I wanted to press charges, which I didn’t. Then they hauled him away, presumably to a bone repair place.

The body shop is Perrigo’s in Santa Cruz. Dan’s done my cars for a few decades. He’s an artisan.
 
Good story... I mean the tweeker part. I think it's close to a fair trade... Dent in a beautiful coupe for a bone fracture. Hopefully the insurance covered the paint work. Looks great!

Thanks. I didn’t file a claim, as I was going to pull the motor and respray the car anyways. I’m saving my insurance mulligans for bigger things :)

Here’s a couple of pics of the paint test plates. The ugly Mary Kay one is to the original BMW paint code. The other one is what the unexposed, unmolested original paint in the car really looked like.

I’m happy with how this thing is turning out. It’s going to be a pretty car. If anyone knows where to find an original style metal gas cap (lost mine at a mechanic’s shop along the way, and the plastic thing in there makes the filler door not shut all the way), good headliner material, a good sunroof seal, and rubber seals for the rear window leading edges (dunno what those are called), I’d love the help. Also, I’m curious about opinions on green versus clear windshields, if anyone has one.

That mirror from Pelican Parts is very high quality FYI.

Gonna drop in a 5 speed and a Schrlck cam, put in a new headliner and glass, and she’ll be done. Except for perhaps a new sound system

I’d recommend these guys. Ray’s Upholstery in Watsonville.They made the shifter boot and recovered the shifter surround in the seat leather. I’m guessing that setup is BTF.

Your Rear seats are nice (no wrinkles), but was it a conscious choice to lose the piped edges on the rear seats (see photo)?

No. I think Amparo at Ray’s made an executive decision on that one. Dunno why.
 
Clean looking Getrag 265. Happy eBay purchase, and a timely swap. The 264 looked a bit unhappy inside. It wasn’t going to go much longer.

Headliner. Pretty decent approximation of what was in the car (original, as best I can tell), although it’s missing some of the faint texture. Should look nice, I think.

New-to-me radio. As advertised. In stunningly good condition. They have NOS Frankfurts available, too, and some later model refurbished stereo Frankfurts, as well. I was pleasantly surprised at the selection and quality. And the excellent service.
