I suggest that you sell your lump for whatever you can get for it. You will want proof of life with a spinning motor if you want anywhere close to $10K IMO.

I still think the absolute safest bet is a known running 3.0CS with carbs. The motor
will be nearly free, and you can put that s38 money towards the gremlins that are guaranteed to come up after getting your car on the road.

If you are hell bent on a 3.5L, don’t buy a long block. I’ll repeat. Buy a running e34 535i, or e32 735i. Swap the motor and factory he harness over. You can get a donor for $5K or less with under 175K miles. Save those s38 funds for a refresh if/when you see issues.

He means what you're also saying. Get a running and driving car so you have everything you need to do the swap (mostly).

To be more specific, buy a cheap e34/e32 that runs and drives. One that you can personally test the motor, and even get a PPI if you want. Once purchased, pull the motor and have pick and pull take the carcass. Call to ensure that they will pickup on a bill of sale and original title.

Firstly, don’t buy a car or motor from
Ohio. Anyone who has spent a significant amount of time in CA will go into shock after buying a 30yo car from the rust belt.

Read this, it will help.

Don’t waste your time with a B34 or older. Good motor but a B34 is bolted to a car that will cost more than a B35 based car. Same for B32’s. Plus, a B35 has more power.

My suggestion. Keep it simple.
If you have some (or will have some ) cash from the sale of your hot motor put it toward a rebuild of your smoky matching numbers engine. Any decent mechanic can overhaul those motors and the parts are all cheap. For all you know the smoke might be a relatively simple fix. Depending on your budget you could even hot it up.
