An interesting ITB setup for M30B34 and M30B35 engines

You've probably seen my posts in other areas of the forum.. asking questions about the M30B34 / M30B35 motor with Megasquirt EFI..

I didn't realize there could be four options for the fuel / air mixture, but then I thought about the individual velocity stacks on my friend's Pantera V8 motor, and it seemed to make sense to me.
  • Option 1: Carb. Carburator feeds multiple cylinders
  • Option 2: Carb. Each Carb feeds a single cylinder - ex: Weber DCOE side drafts
  • Option 3: EFI. One injector per cylinder, single throttle body
  • Option 4: EFI. One injector per cylinder, with individual throttle bodies (ITB).

Option 4 was new to me.. but I found this company I thought it'd provoke an interesting discussion:

Lower intake manifolds with EFI ports, merged with ITB velocity stacks. interesting combination.

I assume the ECU controlling this setup only pays attention to throttle and RPM. But they offer an add-on air intake, You could install air temp and AFM sensors on these...
 
Yeah, there are some good youtube vids on the ITBs. If I had FI, I'd go that route. I believe you rely on throttle position and maybe a vacuum dist block to be able to average out vacuum for a MAP sensor..plus brakes, unless you go boosterless.
 
Hello, There is a company in England that makes a throttle body sized the same as the Weber 36-36 right down to throttle linkages and stock air filter. If you have a relatively stock engine with mild compression increase and somewhat larger cam, This could be another way to go. Webcon Retrojet.

I'd never heard of Jenvey, but I found these three ITB's quite interesting:

that would be a really cool setup for use with the Alpina airbox ... individual throttle bodies are quite cool. loved them on the e30 m3. performance just might be increased a bit. there is also a 42mm bore which could be perfect for a 'nice' engine. too much of a project for right now, but that is a great idea for anybody looking for a great look under the hood.
 
I have been toying with the ITB route… just a beautiful and reliable setup.

On my son’s endurance car (Miata), due to his overall budget, we opted to remove injection and go carbureted. I have a background in the motorcycle industry and love analog, so we went with Keihin carbs off of a Kawasaki ZX6r and had a custom manifold made by Danst Engineering in the UK. I have been thinking this route as an option for either the 2002 or the e3. I have a set of triple Webers that will end up in the coupe or e3, time will dictate.

@RichenFamous : Very cool custom header idea. Here's a M30B35 guy who started something like your project.. but doesn't appear to ever have finished it:

Details on that m20? That looks glorious. My son is planning a stroker for his e30 325is...:-). More for a budget street build...he's only 17. We picked up a spare eta motor for the crank and rods..
 
It ran M20 block, crank was from M54B30, M52 rods, 85mm custom pistons, ported head with IE 284 camshaft, rockers, valves etc. Beautifully built headers. Larger injectors, higher capacity fuel pump with pressure regulator. Was around 236hp at rear wheels, and tons of low down torque (thanks to long stroke and mild camshaft). More pics attached.

Thanks for posting your photos. The removable air intake for your trumpets is quite interesting..

What diameter are the header tubes before the collector? Standard oil pan or dry sump?

ah no. Not actually removable. Well it was, but not quickly. I think some of the pics were from before I added the air intake. RHD started supplying these after i had purchased the ITB kit.
Not sure on the header tubes and since the car is now sold, I cant even check for you. Wet sump but extensive baffles and IE windage tray. No surge issues.
