Barney’s Baikal Blue coupe refresh

I had the pleasure of sitting there at the table when the motor was rebuilt/put together by Terry Sathyer and saw the amount of break in grease / lubrication that was put in as the engine was built so a I’m a couple of heat cycles /150 mile at max on the first oil for me. Put it on the lift this afternoon but it’s still too hot for me to mess with. I’m gonna change the oil in the morning.

Few pictures of the underside after 100 + miles.

Took the coupe out this morning for a 60 mile plus run on my favorite 2002 loop with no problems. Going to change out my first oil in a little bit with 112 miles on It. My new goal now after substantial completion will be too put as View attachment 162840many miles on this coupe as possible.

those European plates are technically my car show plates, I have the real plates in the trunk just in case the law man wants to see them… I have never been stopped, or had any trouble, maybe they’re not legal, but they’re tolerated them so far.

Well, our first big adventure started today, the coupe was picked up by plycar auto shippers being shipped to San Francisco, where we pick it up in a week for a two week trip up the West Coast with the BMW classic club… followed by another two week trip across the Rocky Mountains and back home to Texas.

Barney--Your coupe is in good hands now. Let's hope for a thorough recovery. The fire damage looks to be confined to the area near the battery. How were you able to extinguish the fire?
And we all hope Don is able to find how the fire/short started.

No doubt that it is in good hands for the repair. I say great luck that the damage appears contained. I suspect it could have easily run away and gotten much worse.

When the black/red wire comes off the starter and welds to ground - it’s trouble.
Now you have dead short to coil, through resister and into the ignition switch and all 12 green wire fed circuits. The green and black/red wires become a 10’ long fuse wire wrapped in a harness with lighting, horn and every other damn wire.
Battery to ignition switch and to starter are unfused in early BMW’s.
Later model BMW’s were fused in the box from battery with a fusible link.

Coil, fuse block, relay blocks, relays, voltage regulator, melted battery, dropping resister, harness to be replaced. Carl Nelson had his hands on a replacement harness in minutes. Thank you Carl.
