And the Coup de Grace - 1979 BMW ALPINA B6 2.8L SOLD on BaT in 2018 for $80K. I realize not a 323 but still super cool car.

Wow, I thought I was going to get no response, obviously people away for the weekend. I know where there are at least 2, 323i's and since it is uncommon and good looking, I am interested. We'll see what condition they are in, have not seen them for a while but they are in storage. Not even sure if they are for sale.

Yes, where to put it and yes I hate our 67 mustang, beautiful but basically a go-cart but it was my wife's aunt's car, bought new and spent its life in Huntington Beach.

Hey Drew, got a call, there is a Turkis 2002 for sale near me! Needs nothing.
What a wonderful opportunity!! I should buy it, strip it down to bare metal and paint it Nevada tan......

I LOVE 323is. To each his own, but I prefer the forward "rake" of the E21 nose and suspension stance and the 4 headlights (especially the Euro version Hellas with the two larger outboard lights) - and IMHO, the 6-cylinder 323i is the car that BMWNA should have imported for the E21's swan song in the mid-1980s. They look especially good with the European bumpers - something the original grey-market cars did not come with. I concur - E21s remain relatively under valued and unloved - especially compared to E30s of the day. In Europe it was a "hot rod" - with lots of Hartge and Alpina equipped versions. In the U.S. - a major importer of the grey-market cars was Hardy & Beck in Berkeley, CA - which not only DOT Federalized them - but had to get CA Bureau of Automotive Repair exemptions for all CA registered models - something that still prevents a "49-state" 323i from being registered in CA even today. You won't have that problem in Boston.

But given the rarity of these cars (not a lot of them were mass-gray market imported), it is likely cheaper to buy a clean 1982 or 1983 320i - and just convert it to a 6-cylinder. You can get 323i subframes to adapt the engine, euro bumpers, and rear control arms to convert to disc brakes. Take a look. This one has a 2.5 liter, 180 hp engine out of a 325e. Likely easier to get parts and service for a swapped U.S. engine than that one-off 2.3 liter. My pal did it and has a full spreadsheet of all the parts required to do so. Be sure to swap in for some black leather Recaros unless you're starting with a 1983 320iS.

The only real downside with the 323i (apart from the occasionally scary handling) was the K Jetronic fuel injection system. As I recall the metering unit was very very sensitive to wear and was tricky to set up correctly.

it is beautiful engine I love the way it sits that will be much nicer if it install on E9

as an M20 engine, as was the e30 325i... and if i remember correctly, you could get to a 2.7L with the m20. but the 2.7 m20 had dismal power for some reason - perhaps it was the 325e / 528e engine. the 2.5L m20 produced 169 hp.

if you used megasquirt and a great cam, you could produce a lot more power out of that block. would be kind of fun to take a US 320iS, remove the engine and the big bumpers. then get a m52 2.8L twin cam and work on dropping it in. don't know what tranny would work, no idea if the zf 5 speed would fit. but if that didn't work, the m20 325i engine would be a great start ... and that would work with the standard tranny. source some euro bumpers and you would have a very interesting car.

Yup, yup! That's the ticket.

Now that I think about it, I bought my Daughter an 83 320i for her 16th Birthday. My brother-in-law called me at work one Sat. AM and said a Doctor had just traded a BMW at a local dealership and knowing it was going to be my Daughter's Birthday it would be a good car for her. I told him I was busy at work and if he wanted to call my wife( his sister ) and take her to see the car and if she liked it to buy it.
Half an hour later my wife calls me and says they bought the car and it was a car you had to shift. Now neither me or my wife had ever owned a manual car nor had ever drove one. Since it was two weeks before her Birthday we hid the White BMW in my neighbors garage with a big red bow on the hood. The evening of her Birthday celebration after all our relatives were watching gifts being opened we told her she had one more gift in the garage that was too heavy to open. Everyone with their cameras ready followed my Daughter down to see what her present was. When the door opened there was a huge smile on my Daughter's face. The smile went away as soon as she sat in the car and noticed the two pedals on the floor and that' when the excitement ended as she burst into tears.
The story goes on but the outcome was first I learned and than she learned and all was OK.
Three years later my son got his 83 320i which was his first BMW of about eight he has owned.
I can't help boring you with these stories, I have so many in the sixty years of my family car ownership.
Thanks for taking the time.

BAT to the rescue.
Needs a little sorting(well maybe more than a little). Seems like a good base to build from.
Muffler patched with a license plate says a lot about previous maintenance. o_O

have to put an a/c in it for the ATL area. doesn't look bad, i assume that it has 138k mi. shame it doesn't have a sunroof ...

Turns out, the 323 is not for sale (it is a Bauer) but he has a 320is that I can buy, needs work but I want a project. Will go see it in a few weeks. Believe it has a sunroof etc. Yes, 4 cylinder I know but sports package with larger sway bars, recaro seats, 5 speed.

those are good things - you can always but a 2.5L / 2.8L six in it and build your own fun car. put the 323i rear valance on it and a 323i exhaust from fritz's bits.

Here is my share of e21 Cars or e21 Addict

This is how i found my 323i in Junk Yard in Texas and its got all the goodies Dogleg 5 Speed , Recaro's , Headlight Wipers
Unfortunately the Roof & Supports are Damaged both door won't close properly i will likely use one of my Rollers and swap all parts
