Exactly! It could be indeed that although the folder is printed in feb 1974, that the pic was made in 1969 on an early 2800CS.
The only thing we can conclude for sure that they were existing at least on or before Feb '74.
I've still got 8 with smooth round handles...

Pictures could have been taken earlier or after some time.

I have seen BMW mounting parts in production cars with "Muster" label or marker. :O

All is possible to happen unfortunately.

I would not be really surprised experiencing several types, colors and shapes across production time.
 
All I know is that earliest small drivers have the metal clip to hold the blade but we have pics of both smooth and knurled handles.
 
Not belonging to an original toolkit, but a nice period correct* addition: an 15-17 bent ring spanner. Super handy if you need to replace that starter motor, it's about the only way to get the top bolt out with a full engine bay.

As with original ring spanners it has shiny chromed ends, and it uses the 'No' with a small line under the zero.

* it does say GERMANY, and not W-GERMANY, which has me wondering. Could it be post unification but made with older tooling that was modified to take out the "W-" part?

I dug out my feeler gauge today, and mine has not 3 blades (as on HB Chris' pics), but 4 blades. 0.20, 0.40, 0.60 and 0.70 mm. Just did a search on the forum, and I only come across other with 4 blades. Also the repro from CoupeKing has 4 blades.

@HB Chris I get the *feeling* that your feeler has a hidden 0.40 mm, or 2 original versions may exist.

As mine is a bit rusted; let see if I can polish it out.

edit : just for documentation purposes: here's the reproduction that is sold through CoupeKing: noticable difference is the style of the rivet (stainless steel instead or original brass, a slightly larger diameter and extra flange on inside and outside vs original):

Interestingly an E3 add depicts a detailed tooltray picture with nearly everyting present. It's presented as a74, but i cannot see/read any production date nor VIN.

Of course no one can be sure if anything changed / replaced during it's lifetime, but it all looks very good:

FYI 2 different versions of the feeler gauge.

Top one is from a used set of tools.
95% were e9 correct, so I think this one is as well. It has only the "20" printed in that funny style made with small points instead of a continous line to form the numbers.

Middle one is exactly identical to top one, but was sold as NOS. The package seems to vouche for that. Though it looks NOS, I cannot exclude that it may be for a another bmw model.

Bottom one came with my e9, and has both the "20" and the "40" painted with the funny points. The rivet is missing a flange on the rear side.

Shape of all the blades look identical.


Not sure what's original, this is just to document the existing variations.

Just pulled this 3 blade feeler gauge from my parts stash, marked 40, 60 & 70. There's no stuck blades not is one missing

As far as i remember this was one of the few tools in my kit when i first got the car (74 csi) 25 years ago, and i replaced it with a gauge in better condition

While visting another member , he was so generous as to give me one of the long pliers. (The one in my set is severely rusted).

In order to make it look at it's finest, I took the hinge apart for a good deep clean. The nut can be unscrewed, and screwed back again, but probably not more then a few times.
I think the nut runs up and tightens to the shoulder on the bolt. If you do that a few times, the metal thread on the nut and/or bolt will deform, and you won't reach that locking point before compressing the halves even furter, and jamming the pliers shut.

Here some pics of the seperate parts.

Hmmm, those pliers look strangely familiar... except for the fact that they look a thousand times better than they used to! Well done Erik

On my Csi, it is below the spare tire trunk board on the far left on its side.
I also have an E3 Bavaria caddy has a receiver pocket for it which fits perfectly on the left side of a 2002 with the wheel chock pocket between the outer wheel well & the tail light cover. I keep detailing supplies in it.
