It's currently just past 1am over here. The car is in enough of 1 piece to get it through an mot in 7 hours time. I'll get it on the ramp at work on Saturday for an oil and filter change, fit radio and button up some pieces. Sunroof panel was a bitch to fit and took about 2 hours alone tonight!

Made it into work with no issues other than the lack of radio being a bit boring. OSF brake binding a bit but hoping a good drive will help to take care of that!

Original plugs should be Silber=silver rather than copper but I am not sure if they are still available. Fr 8 DS

W8DC were fitted, now superseded by WR8DC+ which is what I fitted.

Was supposed to take a 2 mile drive home from work, ended up turning into a 40 mile detour. Not a single squeak or rattle. Just need to do some wheel balancing and a bit more driving to clean up the discs as they are a bit corroded from sitting so long, adjust the handbrake and a few little things mechanically before it's perfect. Didn't miss a beat and it was such a smooth running and riding car. I'd love to lower it a touch but the comfort and long distance abilities of it as it is means I don't want to change a thing, just put some miles on it!

The workgear does make me look like a moderately successful 80s kebab equipment salesman.
Looking great. I like the Alpinas even more with the lugs uncovered, like the early pictures in the garage..
Kebab equipment? Euphemism for skewers?

They're replicas, all I could afford for the time being!
Popped to a friends today to fit up some audio equipment and grabbed a tech 1 wheel too.
200 miles of relatively trouble free (if not particularly fuel efficient motoring)
Sitting in standstill traffic after 10 mins the temp gauge was getting uncomfortable so had to pull over and let it cool off. The viscous is shot so will fit up a new one. Steering wheel shimmy between 50 and 60 still there even after balancing up the wheels so will swap fronts and back to see how they are. Budget tyres on the front so them being buggered is realistic. Lots more road testing to do before driving to le mans on June 7th, but what a fantastic boat it is. After 23 years of being off the road I was expecting it to be a bit rougher!

Good stuff. The shimmy at resonant speeds could be the thrust arm bushings. SFDon can give you the latest solution on that which I recall was 7 series bushings pressed into E24 parts. In my experience unbalanced wheels or deformed tires vibrate in proportion to road speed, if it goes away going faster it is a resonant phenomenon outside the wheel geometry.

PS: Replicas for kebab skewers? They are not that expensive...

Shimmy classically is lower control arm bushings, less likely uppers. BTW, check the steering mount, fairly common to crack. There was a fix by MWrench but now NLA. Just mentioning the latter which of course, has nothing to do with the shimmy.

Thanks for the tips. Upper arms are only about 5000 miles old and genuine bmw items although they are old. I have new lower arms and new upper arm bushes. Have a feeling its the wheels or the spacers. A lot of the front end suspension is nearly new. Have spigot rings on the wheels and they do line up. I've seen online even wheel nut torque can have an affect.

Will dig into it a bit deeper this weekend

Ah, you have spacers. Spacers are evil IMHO. I had spacers and large heavy rims on my E24 for a while, combined with play on the old steering box, and that car went where it wanted. Shimmy, tramlining, everything. Put a rebuilt box, Hartge rims with no spacers, and 740 bushes on the control arms, and now it is a Swiss watch setup.

Yes, these cars are sensitive to wheel torque. Used to cause many troubles in the US, I'm told.

Side stripes on, also picked up a tech 1 wheel, got the glovebox light working again (contact cleaner works wonders) and adjusted the headlights.

Will try and get the washers water tight as the system is like a sieve, only a week left till Le Mans!
