Hello I'm Hony from South Germany,

and i have restored a 2800 CS Coupé from 09/1970, which ist now equiped with a 3.5l 218 HP engine from a BMW E24, but Motronik 1.3 selfmade conversion to the CSI inlet from the original 3.0 CSI to keep the vintage styling.

It ist also equiped with a 5 gear manual transmission and 25% LSD differential. The most interesting part in my E9 is the street legal CSL replica parts combined with a hitch trailer. I am allowed to trailer (or tow) up to 1700 kg in my E9 and it is so much fun.

I also invented a conversion kit to electric Odo, cause my next step is to integrate a cruise control, Boardcomputer 2 from E24 and also the entire Check Control System. The electric Odo works great and as a result you need no longer the expensive Transmissions with Outlet for the Odo cable. Maybe also interesting for you Guys with Motor swaps and more modern transmissions.

At the moment I am working with my engineering students from the local university of applied sciences on the first Abs (Anti lock) System inside an E9 and the retrofit of an original air conditioning. Winter time ist working time.

The mechanical parts of the Abs System are already done, I only have to do all the wiring and put the battery into the trunk. Secondly I am also working in amore direct power steering with less rpm while cornering and with some luck I get it finished next Weekend. Target 3.5 rpm from left to right instead of Stock 4+.

As you can see lots of work to get done, but If James Bond would have been a German agent, he might have wished (or destroyed) my E9 in a mission.

Sorry for my bad english, but I hope you enjoy my engineering or at least the pictures.
Looking forward to get in Touch with younand maybe you Like my new solutions to the old E9....

Hony

I forgot to mention.. the wheels are early hartge BBS RA 16` from 1981 and the car is equiped with aftermarket sport seats, 4x power windows, colour glass, Blaupunkt Sqr88 Radio with bluetooth and self made Pin striping and stainless exhaust and a schmiedmann scmm30 header. My target ist Always to keep the vintage styling but with invisible "modern" techniqe.

Welcome, my car is also Polaris, and I get the "James Bond car" question quite often.

I appreciate your design philosophy: "My target is to keep the vintage styling, but with invisible 'modern' technique."

I am an electrical engineer, and I look forward to hearing more about your designs.

Hi Honey, nice to see you here!
Greetings from Münsterland
Thomas

Nice to see and read about your car also here, Hony:)
I am sure James Bond would appreciate the trailer; but maybe even more so our companions from The Netherlands?

The Abs System ist fully desigend by the Students- they are amazingly creative and with little help from the University they get all Problems solved. Good Projects will lead to good students.

We also hope, that we get the car back on the road till 1st of April to show the ABS System to the german Tüv to get it official into the car documents.

We are also very curious how the car brakes and handles with the new braking system. I didn't like the brake padle feeling of the original 2 hose system- it felt indirect and "long distance" even with steel brake cables instead of rubber. I think the possible improvements on the power steering won't be that effective, but we'll see. It's more about getting things done. I also buildlt serveral BMW E30 strokers with 2.8l m20 engines and 6 speed swaps and other stuff like this.

I'm a "classical mechanical" car engineer, but got also a little bit into electronics over the time, but my students are much better with electrons, controll units, wiring and other Coulomb stuff. I couldn' to the Project without them.

The swabian people (geographically next to the bavarians) love it practial, too.

I have a hitch trailer system on every car always with the highest pull limit. Why not combing the usefull things with the beautiful ones. Especially with 310 Nm of the "senior Iron pig" m30b34 engine.

But .. i also modifiyd the E9 electrical connection, so that you can't see it directly. You can only see the Cover cap of the detachable system.

Hello,

I only have 3 small updates at the moment:

1. The students transfered the battery into the trunk and also the wiring of the sensors is now attached to the rear axle. Within the next weeks, they´ll do a first wiring and sensor test and then we can go on with adapting it all to the original E9 wiring/loom.

2. I used the time to improve the steering and I made a big mistake on my prototyp , that could be very interesting for all the E9 drivers, which steer from the wrong side (RHD). ;-.). I´m able now to upgrade a RHD BMW E9 steering from stock 4,1 rpm to a more direct steering with only ~3,75. So if someone has a RHD E9 with power steering, I really would like to upgrade his steering box. Feel free to contact me, I´m located in the South of Germany, next to the head quater of ZF in Friedrichshafen, who produced the steerings (in the facility, near the citiy of Schwäbisch Gmünd). Perfect for racing uses. I think it will take some more research, calulations and machining to get it done for a LHD. Redoing it all is not for punishment.. only educational purposes.

3. I also worked on my AC-side project and found a super simple solution to integrate a cheap amazon cooler with a reliable blower fan from spal.
I used the amazon cooler CN 20016XC A/C, and you can easly bolt on the spal blower 1680 m³ D3060-D330 T=52 / VA13-AP9/C-35s 12
V. The upper thread of the cooler (intake) is ¾-16 for a #8 hose and the lower one (out) is 5/8-18 for a #6 hose - perfect! The cooler fits perfectly in the outer holes of the Amazon cooler. You only need 2 small M5 screws and nuts. No extra metal holder required. I only used a small strap of rubber as a layer to prevent any kind of vibrations (not required in my opinion). To keep the cooler in position I made 3 simple "L-shaped" metal angles (holder/brackets), which get actually power coated and use the original 6 mm holes of the front grill. I used the time to work, instead of making pictures, so I can only show the mounting of the AC fan.

Simple solutions are often the best ones!

Now I purchased different dryers to find out, which one offers the possibility to integrate a pressure security switch ("trinary switch"), to prevent my new compressor from leakage or high pressue.

Kind regards

Process goes on. The updated steering with ~3,75 rpm from lock-to-lock is back in the car. I combined with a more powerful 130 bar steering pump of an E23. I´m very curious if the steering will be too soft and how it corners. Hopefully as good as my E24.

ABS is 99 % done and should bei in working condition now. First testing is possible in April, when I´m allowed to drive again. We have all the sensor signals on the osizloscope, but don´t know, if they are vaild enough for the control unit.

But it looks good, cause... when... Ignition on, ABS control light is on, start engine.. light goes off and when turning the wheels on the lifter... no ABS controll light appears. It will get interesting, when I drive faster than 5 km/h and all the wheels deliver continously signals.

Will the light return or not and does the ABS control loops its job like planned?! And even more interesting- how does it brake with 1 line brake calipers?!

The cover for the ABS control module is also finished, to prevent it from getting flodded. Idk if there will be at any time any water again, except washing the car.

AC is also quite far done. I installed an security pressure switch to prevent the compressor. I´m only waiting to get the missing gaskets and fittings to finsh the linings in the engine bay. Getting enough space for the 1988 Blaupunkt SQR88 Radio with hidden bluetooth modul is a problem and also the entire additional wiring for the cruise control and extra functions like seat heating make it more difficult. Comes time, comes space..

To bridge the waiting time, I started with the wiring of the Boardcomputer 2 and it also shows signals and works properly. That was honestly too easy, when you have all the conections already done while restoring the chassis. It is also funny to see the actual speed with digital digits in such an analog car.

Instrumentenbeleuchtung.jpeg

Also the new control lamps in the speedo are working, showing the ABS-system and when a trailer is connected.

The check control system is actual the final enemy, cause you need to rebuild the logic with all the E30-controlmoduls and marry them with the cables I installed while the chassis restoration. And that are plenty of cables with different colours.

But if you think, that is is the worst part.. not its not. Its myself... I´m completly stupid, cause I found a broken head light wiper system for the E9 coupe and even more stupid... I bought to make my personal option list more or less complete.

My bond car has then every desireable option, except sun roof (doens´t fit to a race car), leather (I prefer fabric), rear seat belts (no space for more than 1 extra passenger).

Kind regards from a completly stupid and car addicted E9 enthusiast

One Step ahead- the first ABS-Braking with an E9 happend yesterday. Before the first test drives, I need to adjust the toe on the front axle and check the braking forces on the testbench. That will happen on 1st of April.

The AC also works now, after several attempts to fix the leaks on the AC-connectors. I installed a super cheap Mercedes drier behind the front grill, so I have more space (and less heat influence) in the engine bay. Also a pressure sensor was installed.

I have a high pressure and a low pressure filling point now. One sits directly on the BMW E24 compressor and the other below the air filter box.
The spal blower is directly connected to the AC switch and also to the temperature switch of the thermostat housing.

BMW E9 Mittelkonsole.jpeg

Now I have to rework the middle console to get it connected to the higher sitting AC-panel. I have seen some pictures in this forum (Link: https://e9coupe.com/forum/threads/a-c-faceplate-and-console-position.45920/#:~:text=I have done some further, merdad, thanks for the input!) and maybe I can use the gap for my cruise control or seat heating switches- ideas do I have enough.

To compensate the higher steering support of the power steering I installed (for testing) a 35 cm Petri steering wheel out of an 2002 and I have to say- it feels perfectly. Also getting in the car is much easier now. I think I will replace for ever the big 40 cm Petri sport steering wheel to the smaller one.

The check control system works properly, but was a lot of work, due to different wiring colours and many cables running through the entire car (already). Installing the front screen water sensor is still an issue, but maybe I can also use a cheap Mercedes 190 sensor. An order is placed and then I will check.

The front wiping system also works, but I have to do a change to the wiring. The front light wiper system (SWRA) came in 1973 with the modern electronics and I have a 1971 model wich is ground based.

The "perfect driving machine" is within reach.

Remaining tasks:

- Modify the center console to include various additional switches
- Align the wheels
- Reupholster the front seats and install seat heating pads
- Do a rewiring of the head lights cleaning system (SWRA)

Kind regards
