my new engine M30B30

Hi DeQ,
the std piston was 88.97mm and then there were 89.02, 89.22 and 89.47. The combination of any of these with an 84mm crank will produce an engine with the same capacity as a Bat-CSL engine. That one having higher piano-top pistons (9.5:1) due to its D-jetronic configuration. The 84mm crank however was also used in the M90, used in all 3.5 between 78 and 81.

Check the markings on the inside of the pistons, those numbers will give you the answer which engine they were made for.

the following numbers were found in the piston that came out from the engine,

outside, 89,22 A2

inside,

C0 31
+89 V14
mahle

and that is all

so the head is ready,

easier than the block, i found it through the help of generous DerSchwede, it belonged to a 1985 e24, reference: 1277358

it is a reference of cyl head that at least has the base shape for the mech fuel pump, but usually the hole for the mech pump is not present so you have to do it afterwards

i have solved the problem that represents the existence of a stud in the vincinity of the mentioned hole

Did you deck the front timing cover along with the head? Here is what the marks look like on a head that has not been decked.

The M30b34 from the 635 CSi had 92mm bore and 86mm stroke, so the 89mm pistons DeQ has come from an M30 with a capacity between 2985 and 3295cc. In this very case, the pistons show the Mahle No. for 3.0 D-jet engines.

BTW, I just checked that wikipedia-link and it's dreadful; half of the information is either false or misleading/incomplete.

The only publication I found this far with good information is the BMW Engine book(s) by Dr. Lange (R&D manager back in the days, responsible for M70 etc.)
 
exhaust manifolds, NOS found in germany, sanded and cleaned with petrol



painted with rust-oleum rated 750 degrees



rocker arms, found NOS too, had to clean them to remove the old protective stuff



this one is good, i have been keeping the different bits for protecting them, so first i sand blasted them and keep them in protective oil

top head cover and bottom engine block cover are only just cleaned, i am considering to clear coat bottom cover and head cover will be painted in black probably, the surface is not so beautiful



today degreased and send to the shop to matt chrome them, extra protection against rust, and nice finish, these parts will combine good with adjacent black parts such as engine block

 
pretty little jobs

just preparing the head prior to assembly, i had a pending issue, thread the holes that support the fuel pump, the thread made was too short, i have to complete it until the other side of the wall





love to do it sloooowly






after doing this, i cleaned the head with gasoline and compressed air during 15 minutes, every hole and corner

checking the fuel pump rod with the camshaft in the head



they did a nice job, perfectly aligned with the camshaft lever

new parts have been ordered,
finally i will replace:
- oil pump
- oil pump chain
- timing chain (double)
- guides, tensioner and so on for chains
- crankshaft pulley to double timing chain
- camshaft pulley, same purpose
- new valves
- new valve guides
- piston rings
- new exhaust manifolds
- new bushings
- gaskets
- all new bolts, nuts, and washers
- new water pump
- pulley for water pump (was bent, needed new one)
- new adjusting eccentric, springs, etc for rocker shafts
- guide valve seals
waiting to receive some of these parts, will open a break in the process
 
some possible finishing painting for head cover

as the head cover is impossible to maintain as it is due to bad aspect, irregular colour, and so on, i am considering different possibilities, your choice ?













as to the bottom cover i will maintain as it is:

 
after jerry´s advice on a wrinkled finish, i tried to do my best to somehow obtain a less brilliant and smooth finish

this is the best that i have been able to achieve



now i am not sure to clean the central little lines of the bmw emblem or leave it like this:



all opinions will be welcome
 
I think the Valve cover has to be perfect on this engine. If going black, I would get it powder coated Satin with the stripes and emblem in natural satin aluminum. That is what I hope to do to mine.
