Hi E9 Folk,

Just joined as I "inherited" a 73 CS? project car. Am not able to trace the VIN#
It is located above the steering wheel and on a riveted plaque in the engine bay.

I have not removed the back seat to see if there is a build sheet there. Which side would it be on and where?

3105114 is the number...

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Adam

Your VIN is from a 73 3.0S e3 sedan. What is stamped on the firewall facing the passenger? I don’t know anyone who has ever found a build sheet regardless of what the BMW Archive says.

As @HB Chris says,I don't believe that build sheets were placed in BMW's as some other manufacturers did at the time. You can write to BMW archives and they will send some very basic information on the build date, receiving dealership and original color.

Actually my 79 528i did have a small paper sheet under the rear seat so might likely began after e9 era. And my 67 230SL had a thorough build sheet under the driver seat which was very cool, these were separated from the larger factory build sheet.

As Chris said an E3 VIN. There is an E9 here with that same issue, except they even changed the firewall numbers. Maybe, the correct VIN is still on the engine if original.

Many Thanks! How did you find that out? The same number is on the passenger side firewall. What is a 3.0S vrs a 3.0CS (or was that a typo?)

Is the VIN on the firewall facing the engine side or the cabin?
Just a question, is your car 4 door or 2

It is facing the engine and the car is a two door. just wondered why the VIN is not listed here on the following thread:

This matches the vin above the steering wheel. Have not yet looked to see if there is one on the starter or the heater bulkhead.

It is not listed because it is not an e9 VIN. Someone has replaced the VIN plates of an e3 to your car.

You need to count the doors on your car and then study your registration.
Your registration document shows how many doors your car has.
If they don’t match you have a fairly common “workaround “ for totaled or stolen cars.
Your next step will be bonding your car if you are driving around in a 2 door/4 door e3/e9

A 3.0CS (E9) is a two door coupe. Looks like this...

A 3.0S (E3) is a 4 door sedan...

Which does yours look like?
I have the two door and my friend whom I got the car from has had it for at least 8 years. I will inquire as to where he got it from. Also going to clean off the starter and see if there is a number there.

Thanks All
