Thanks to everyone for their input and advice.
I was hoping to get into a CSL (not a Batmobile although I would take one if it came along) for somewhere between $60,000 and $80,000. I am not even sure I'm in the ball park as I haven't been following the sales too closely for the last year. My youngest brother has recently passed away from pancreatic cancer and has left me a small inheritance. As he was a car guy (87 Porsche, 68 El Camino, 2013 Ford Raptor) I thought it was only fitting that I put the money towards the car of my dreams. Any help in this endeavour would be appreciated.

Thanks

Barry

don't forget our local hero

Barry, Jon's advice is all on the mark.
If you are looking, send out feelers to coupeking.com, coupeguy.com, The Werk Shop (Don Detlefsen), Carl Nelson (La Jolla Independent BMW), and Ron Perry (RonP on this site). They know where the CSLs are.
Good luck,
Scott

Everything I've seen under $50k

has been rusty.
The few I've seen below $50k had rust and crash damage.
Between $50k and $70k you can find some drivers that look okay but all hvae needed another $30k-$45k or more to be what I'd call a #2 car.

I'd say the market is at $100k for a really nice LHD driver (non-BAT, non early carb'd car), and $70-80k for a really nice RHD driver.

Having been around and looked at an awful lot of rhd csls, I'd say there are only 20-25 really nice ones about. The owners of these know this and are generally in them for the long term. I think a lot of the rhd discount is down to an overall lesser average condition as well as supply and demand of rhd.

Brits like their cars a bit scruffy?
That nice polaris one that was featured in C&SC (or something similar) looked really great and sold for 50kGBP in 2011, right?

Not so much that but the weather combined with salt and a pretty pathetic annual roadworthiness test allows a lot of cars to get into a bad way where they don't in Europe and in the US you have more fair weather regions.

Every time I've been in the UK the weather was very nice. No snow and no rain. It did drizzle a lot though. I think your trouble is the lack of attached garages that are warm and dry. Instead you have tiny damp sheds with porous floors and no dehumidifiers

Here are 2 examples of cars for sale in the UK
http://www.4starclassics.com/BMW-E9-CSL-Fjord-Blue/ @$50,000 Canadian.
This car is original except the engine and as the Brits say, is in pretty good nic, considering it has 106,340. It is a city model but does have the aluminum doors, hood and trunk lid. The big draw back is that the original buyer had a sunroof and vinyl put on.
http://www.4starclassics.com/BMW-E9-CSL-For-Sale/ @$81,000 C
This car has been restored in the 90's and supposedly never seen rain and kept in a garage. It also has a city pack but has the aluminum door skins, bonnet and boot lid (hood and trunk lid for those of you that don't speak British).

Both have been for sale for a while and the owners are willing to dicker a little. It would cost about $4500 to ship and 5% GST (tax) to import them.

What are thoughts on these cars? I know that being RHD has a penalty to the price, but they seem to fall within the price range of cars over here and they are for sale.

I haven't seen the orange car but love the colour! All UK delivered cars seem to have been delivered with ally opening panels unlike city pack lhd cars where steel doors were common. Some rhd cars also had wind up windows it seems.

Barry,

Sorry to hear about your brother and I admire the way you want to treat the funds.

The guys have given some good advice here, especially (30csl) about why RHDs are generally less money.

I think Johns (bfengs) assessment of prices is bang on, although please keep in mind the top end price of $100k is a very good driver, it should be a very nice car, but that does not mean a mint car. I know of a very nice LHD car with steel doors that just sold for $125k, privately in one phone call, between two people that new each other.

No matter what, if you want to end up with a very good CSL, you are looking at early six figures and it is ALWAYS better to buy the best you can especially if you can get something somebody else has done all the work on.

Good luck

Consider this

A sunroof and vinyl can be removed for under $10k

Some city package cars in the USA haw steel door skins, but perhaps alloy door skins were more common on RHD city package cars.

Mobile.de has a 78k euro = $105k Golf Csl
http://suchen.mobile.de/auto-inserat/bmw-andere-bmw-3-0-csl-werdau/181529725.html
For sale by individual in Germany.

iTranslate (sorta) translated the short description :
"Homologation series, exact designation 3.0 CSL, 1A State
In first-hand (original owner??)
Complete restoration in 2004 with Orginal parts in the specialist
Cavity protection
General inspection on request new (ready to use)"

I was looking at site to check market for more ordinary E9s. about 30 2800/3.0/2.5 coupes are listed and of course wide range of prices. Couple full restos in progress are $68k, while highend for nice looking originalish cars about $40k. Was a bit surprised that descriptions, espec rust info was generally thin.

Nice one, but OUCH - should be using the frame rails to lift up the car though.

Yes - also has an AC, according to the ad.
