Hi Folks,

Selling/Shipping for a friend. I have an original 3.0cs only 40cm Petri. Includes the original CS-specific hub and crack-free cover.

Spokes are in very good condition. Pics below intentionally catch the light to show any marks in the chrome.

Foam face and “stitch” in very good condition. Some minor factory “pitting” most prevalent at 2PM. All Petris have this but if you buy and sell enough you may find one without air bubbles. See foam videos for complete perspective.

FYI - This CS wheel was mounted on a 2002, but it is indeed an e9 wheel/hub/cover. You can see the original CS horn ring rivet holes. Included is a new repro petri hong ring wonderfully crafted by @Wladek. I can install if desired.

What you get from this ad is total transparency, no surprises, no obscured defects. More pictures available upon request.

It is a flat wheel from a 3.0CS. The dished wheel was found on Audi's. The dished wheel has a very narrow grip and tapered foam spoke ends.

This is a dished 40cm Petri - NOT FOR SALE!

@Markos - Was this specific wheel an option on the 2002 or E3? I know “Sport wheel” was, but not sure which was for which model. Thanks.

40cm would make turning that 2002 wheel a bit easier. Would like original option on E3, but not sure I want to stay that large with PS.

Hi @AustinOski,

This 40cm wheel was an option for the 3.0CS and presumably the E3. The 2002 wheel was a 35CM version with a different/shorter hub. The CSL wheel was also different. Obviously one could buy whatever they wanted, but the part number in the hub of this wheel is tied to the the CS.

As far as size the original e3 wheel is closer to 42cm. A 38cm wheel would be a 1.5” reduction, which isn’t insignificant.

Here is how a Petri 38 stacks up against the 40.

Can someone enlighten me as to how to tell if a Petri wheel is an original wheel or not Are there markings on the wheel to distinguish it as an original wheel? And did Petri's only come with holes in the spokes or were any of them have slotted openings in the spokes?

Thanks, Rick

There are no part numbers on the wheels. There are subtle hints on an old wheel, such as scratches or marking that line up with a different style horn button. You can't gleam much by the shape of the foam either. There are two distinct styles of spoke end, and multiple styles of rim "stitch" (cast foam). I've seen 40cm petri's with the square spoke ends (like this one), or the tapered spoke ends (similar but slightly less pronounced as the Audi wheel above). There are BMW brochures with both styles shown. It appears to me that BMW old the wheel/hub as a package, and the part number is only stamped on the hub. The flat 40 was only offered on the BMW. The 38 was offered on the BMW (35cm,38cm,40cm flat), VW Scirocco (38cm flat), and Audi Fox / VW Passat TS (40cm dished).

@stphers

Hi Rick,
Adding to Markos,
The Company Petri made steering wheels for a number of different cars and car companies (VW/ Audi/ MB/ BMW etc).
All the factory standard steering wheels for the E3/E9/E10 were made by Petri.
Optional Sports wheels: E9 and E3 were officially offered the 40cm three spoke/ three holes per spoke wheel as an optional sports wheel.
The 38cm was the optional sports wheel for the E10 and the E9 CSL which has a leather grip.

And yes, the Petri 838 wheel has slots even though it’s not meant to be for BMW’s........
More often than not, you will find the Petri insignia (2nd pic) on one of the rear spokes of most of their wheels, hubs and covers.

A 40 cm Petri works excellent on a 2002. After all, 99% of the 2002's came with a factory 40 cm steering wheel. I've never understood why a 35 cm is considered to be a 2002 size. It's small, for track toys only, I would say. From the early sixties, up to the late seventies, 40 cm and 42 cm were normal sizes for a BMW. 38 cm for sporty cars, like the CSL and the 2002 Turbo.

Very early Petri's didn't have any markings, but most of them are stamped with the Petri logo and the size in cm.

I agree with all of you who said a larger wheel (38 or 40) is a more comfortable size on a 2002. I have a 36CM Nardi on the 2002, it’s just a bit too small when I’m in a parking lot or something.

I bought this Petri (very excited) for my E3. I’ve been trying to find a really clean one. My E3 has 42k miles and is, well, clean. My dad had the same wheel on his ‘72 3.0s!

However, there is a part of me that is tempted to put this in the 2002 and the Nardi in the E3 from a functional/aesthic standpoint. The wood Nardi would look good in the E3.

But, I’ll probably stick with the Petri in the E3. Maybe I start the hunt for a 380mm for the 2002? o_O

Here’s the E3, at present. I’ll follow-up with another pic when it’s in the car and when I’ve replaced that damn shift knob! That knob can go in my other 2002, an Inka one.
