These e28s are really starting to grow on me

In the uk, I've owned 5 of these machines throughout the 90's and used them as everyday transport - a great driving machine.

I've kept the last one I bought and happens to be the very last UK chassis no with only 11,000 miles since new.

The Dinan one would be some machine and not overpriced with that mileage...

That sounds like a great car! I thought Richard Baxters car had the last chassis number in the Uk though?? I sold 153 last year and I do miss it.

and grow they did

I finally bit the bullet and bought one. I’ve had the car for about 9 months now taking care of a few things:

New tires
New rims
New brakes
New brake bomb
New clutch master and slave cylinders
New alternator and battery
New fuel pump
New starter
New radio
New control arms and tie rods
New headlights
Body and paint work
New interior pieces
Added a rear sunshade

Time to get back to the coupe

That looks awesome.

I'm not too up on the details of the e28 but those bumpers are strictly euro and were never available in the US, is that right?

Wow. What are the wheel specs on your E28? Looks fabulous!

Correct. This was a conversion done by Carl Nelson many years ago. In the E28 crowd, this car is considered to be the first conversion done---but I don't know if that's true.

Lord I want a euro spec e28. I don't even car if it is a 520i. I was on the way to look at an e28 when I offered to buy my neighbor's E9...

Yep, the look is infectious. I get stopped all the time, even once by a motorcycle cop. But they are surprisingly hard to find. I only saw four in 5 years of looking and they are spendy compared to the US cars. I wonder if bringing in a car from the UK would be cheaper.

Here is some eye candy for all you E28 fans - my '87 M5, when she was still mine (sold her 3 years ago, to an Australian collector).

Yes, they are wonderful cars.

Can't get much better than an 3.0CS and an E28 M5.
Although my friend George has a 2800 and an 850 CSI 6sp.

My M5 has E46 M3 power and torque thanks to all the engine mods I have done.

Nice M5.
Your friend George has great taste also.....I really wish I'd been able to keep my 850CSi....such a rare and beautiful car.

I have an E28 as well and its perfect example of project scope creep. Without providing a complete chronology of the project, I've ended up with the following:

85 535i, 230K

  • M30B34 stroker motor w/ B35 pistons, 3.7L displacement, 10:1 compression (Crank by Dinan)
  • Paul Burke built head w/double springs, 2 mm larger intake valves, new valve train, Paul Burke N21 cam, B35 intake manifold
  • Bosch Design III 24 lb injectors, 50 PSI fuel pressure, Big Bore throttle body, Miller MAF, War chip, custom tune
  • 533i flywheel, M5 Clutch, 5 spd, 3.64 LS
  • Stahl Headers into X-pipe into Magnaflow cat back
  • Dinan Stage 4 suspension including adjustable rear subframe
  • Dinan spec BBS RZ 16" wheels (staggered) with Dunlop Startacs IIs
  • E32 front and E34 rear brakes, E32 M/C, braided lines
The end result: 224 HP/265 ft-lbs torque (measured at wheels). Pulls nicely :).
