Turbo or not?

Ray, did you ever get anywhere with turbocharging your car? I'm thinking about it with mine and found this old thread via Google search

FYI - I have 2 coupes getting M106 factory turbo engines right now. The engine going into the Turkis car at Legends was on a stand at the show.

Jeff: Right on! You must be getting close to retirement and looking for some new projects :)

Cheers

Hi John - I am an open lug Alpina kinda guy but you could also connect with ChuckM (iconoclast) who had the more modern closed lug Alpinas

I have had closed lug wheels for years.
I think they are great.

Btw- there are about 5 turbo motors stashed away.
Peter.

So far I have made
545i e28
745i e32
Making two different 4.5 csi's e9

Engines can be had for 2000 bucks.

I am more curious to hear about the suspension, brake and structural mods that may go along with the increased power.

I'm rather surprised you are going with the multi-part 745 / M103 manifold. Most of the M30 turbo guys seem to avoid them due to increase cracking compared to a newer TCD manifold.

After owning 8, working on 20+ with over a million miles at least on them I have never had a serious problem with a BMW e23 turbo exhaust manifold.
He has nice products but I already own the package with the engine for 1500 bucks.

Don, say some more.
How does it feel vs the 3.5 M30? Can it be "mated" to the auto ZF4HP22 or it has to be manual? Are these motors overhauled after having started life and worn faster as turbos? How long does the transplant take? Would you come install it in my driveway while I make you an espresso?

The m106 is quite different from m102
Different compression, boost, operating system.
Early Alpina and BMW turbo systems offered low compression and high boost.
The 4hp22 eh version uses an extra large bell housing for the big P1 torque converter- I would wonder whether it would fit in the coupe.
Keep in mind the m106 developed max torque at only 2200 rpm and managed 144 mph in
3 gear. In 4th gear at 80 mph the engine was only running at 2000 rpm so it was hard to wear out.

Most of the guys that I know that modified their cars to run higher boost ran at 1 bar-
That works out to be 300hp and 375 ft lbs of torque.
