Good stuff Chris. Will that be a single stage paint? Any info on the paint make you are using for Verona?

Arde--Yes, it is single-stage paint. I will get the product info for you.

I will add a couple of shots with the renovated gas tank in place.

Gas tank renovated

Here are a couple of shots with the rehabbed gas tank in place. Once you start restoring, you can't stand the idea of bolting beat-up 40-year old parts back on to the like-new shell!

@oneills--I did fill in the rear reflectors (and the front amber ones under the turn signal lights). Attached photo of the fuel filler door shows the patched-up section. Would not want to put the ugly old DOT lights back on!

Hello everyone. This project is about to start again. I will start a thread on the restoration page--there is a lot to cover since it began in 2001. Stay tuned.

and I thought DB Couper was the best handle on the forum I'd seen...
DB Couper is the OG and the inspiration. I wasn't dashing enough to be "Gary Couper", and don't like the Brewers or the Astros, so it couldn't be "Cecil Couper."

Special thanks to @Markos and @dang for helping me change the name so I didn't have to start a new account.

You are welcome to check out my Verona, I am in northern California. The car is Verona from the factory and was repainted in the nineties using a single stage German paint I believe. A couple of years ago I had Dave Crawford do his clinic on the car, and the color that emerged was shiny, brighter, and perharps more orangish, good stuff. Here are a some pictures:

Update: I have rescued the coupe from Canada, where it languished in a barn for 16 years and was nearly stolen (by one of the people who was supposed to be restoring it). I drove it, and a 74 3.0CS I plan to restore, down to San Diego in May. This adventure included a double blowout of trailer tires at 6am on Sunday Morning, Mothers Day, 50 miles north of Sacramento. The 2800CS was in the U-haul, and the 3.0CS in the cargo trailer. More to come.

never a dull moment... and many to come. Best wishes for your resto journey. Will they proceed in tandem or separately? Tandem gives the advantage of using newly-learned lessons, but doubles the amount of immediate work.

The 2800CS will go first. The 3.0CS will proceed when the budget, bandwidth, storage space and parts allow. We will see how the expertise builds.

In the meantime, here are some interior color choices. I'm leaning heavily toward the tan leather in the center.

you almost can't make a bad decision among those choices! I agree with the center color. It will be great!

A chance to paint the U-haul and the cargo trailer to decide which color you like best...

Update 2: The Coupe Circus Arrives in San Diego

And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
You may ask yourself, "Well, how did I get here?"

So after the 6am Mothers' Day double blowout on the cargo trailer, I finally got back on the road around 1pm, thanks to 4 new tires and 2 new rims from Ali Khadim of USA Tires in Woodland, CA. Ali is awesome. Without him I would still be sitting by the I-5 with a U-Haul, a cargo trailer, 2 coupes and a ton of crappy, heavy parts.

Everyone in Northern California should go out of their way to patronize Ali's shop. http://www.usatireinc.com/about.aspx

So I eventually made it down to San Diego and unloaded everything at my sister's property. I needed a body shop to complete the job and the daunting task of sorting through all the parts and putting the mess back together. Now what?

Update 3: Mexico??

You may ask yourself, "Where does that highway go to?"
You may ask yourself, "Am I right, am I wrong?"

You may say to yourself, "My God! What have I done?"

So I start making calls looking for body shops: Coupe King, Carl, many others. All the recommendations involve 2nd mortgages and no great promise of quality work. Where will they take their time, straighten panels, block sand, meticulously hand finish, without insane rates? I recalled some 2002, Porsche and Westfalia owners had good experiences with body shops in Mexico.

So off I go on the internet looking for more info:

Update 4: Make a Run for the Border

Hey Joe, I said, where you goin' to run
to now, where you, where you gonna go?
Well, dig it! I'm goin' way down south, way down south
way down south to Mexico way! Alright!
I'm goin' way down south, way down where I can be free!

Ain't no one gonna find me babe!

The name Taller Los Panchos keeps coming up in the articles about the 2002s, Porsches and VWs. So I decide to take a diligence trip down to Aunt Jane's fun house.
I walk over, and find several Westfalias and a 2002 being painted at Los Panchos. I talk to Chito, show him some photos, and he says: "no problem." (What else would he say?) He says they have done many 2002s, a few coupes, and many Westfalias.

Stay tuned

Hello Everyone, it's been a while. 4 years to be exact. What happened? I found a body shop and a mechanic, brought the car to them, and many years, tears, dollars, WhatsApp messages later, and much gnashing of teeth and rending of garments, we are getting much closer. Also in the meantime, the world shut down with Covid, I moved to Utah, then moved back to LA, and here we are. So hello again, how have y'all been?

The car has been sprayed out in Verona, color sanded and buffed, and just this weekend started to get the refinished chrome back.

Here are some photos from the journey.
