i've read some reviews that the frankfurt mb is made in China ... and is average at best.

Scot, Phone controls volume on the OutofSight Amp. On other cars I included the radio signal to the amp but I never listen to the radio. In the old days it was for AM traffic but with Google Maps no more.
In our Honda we have SiriusXM so we don't listen to local stations. If you've got an account and a bluetooth adapter for your radio you can play it from your phone.
There's also an app and website called RadioGarden that enables you to listen to a huge number of radio stations across the world for free that should also allow you to play through the bluetooth adapter.

Currently installing 5 systems. Everybody gets what they want.
My own system is icu 130 focal in front, 690 ac focal under rear seats. My dash wood is speaker delete so nothing there and my doors are ashtray delete so no tweeters there. That means the front and rear speakers are full range. The icu 130 speakers are a special thin design to let them fit easier in front. Mark 4 out of sight audio under rear seat with a Becker radio dummy in the AC panel.
The Focal ICU 130 is a pair of 5.25-inch 2-way coaxial car speakers that feature a shallow 1.9-inch mounting depth
As a side note- Amazon is much cheaper than crutchfield when buying speakers.

i think i'm going to stay with the frankfurt and go with out of sight audio mk4.
Great thread. I think for my Bav, I might gut the old stereo it came with and just fill it with a BT receiver and LED light to look like it’s functioning. I’ll never use the radio function, so bt with some sort of custom/vintage looking phone mount for map needs will probably be the path..

Question for speaker wiring.
I have a 1972 euro Frankfurt with 2 of these speaker wire plugs both of which are connected to the 2 rear speakers in the parcel self. Is there a splitter I can use on one of them to feed both rear speakers so the other one can connect to my center dash speaker?

You probably don't want to do that. The output is stereo. If you hook one channel tot he front speaker and the other to the rear pair f speakers, you will lose any stereo imaging. I'd recommend looking up a recent thread where we created a 2-speaker insert for the front in-dash speaker. There are two different ones. One for planar speakers and one for small cone speakers. Then wire each of those in parallel with its corresponding side in the back.

@Lucas thanks for posting those photos. The schematics show how the faders are wired. I have both the six spade and twelve spade versions sitting around for years. Now I know how they’re wired.
Radios were dealer installed, Most BMWs of the era, e3, e9 and 2002, stereo radios, had one front center speaker and two rear speakers and a separate fader control. I imagine the installations varied depending on the radio brand and the dealer doing the install.

Faders are used to balance the signal between the front speakers in a stereo (1+2) or quadraphonic (2+2) setup.
Some car radios from that era featured a built-in fader, but it was designed solely to balance the left and right channels.
This external unit provides an additional control, allowing you to adjust the sound output between the front and rear.
In a 2+2 system, the rear speakers essentially complement the front ones, so their volume level should always be lower than that of the front speakers.
