Visiting San Francisco - recommendations welcome :-)

there are a ton of great places to eat not too far from Moscone (reasonable walk) ... a few of my casual favorites
Tadisch seafood grille (California st near Battery st)
Perbacco (italian - california st)
La Mar Cocina (peruvian seafood = next to the ferry terminal)
noshing at the Ferry Terminal - Gotts is a favorite
chinatown - great chinese (i don't know names)

i will think of a few others, but i know some of the locals will have a few thoughts.
You will not need a car in SF. Use WAYMO! It's cheap and fun, and there is no driver! I use them all the time.

I highly recommend La Mar Cocina. Fabulous seafood. Water Bar is a good steakhouse over near the base of the bridge on the Embarcadero, and The Progress over on Fillmore is always great.

Fisherman's Wharf (Scoma's, Cioppino's , etc) is always fun, but very touristy and the food is generally touristy too.

Still touristy, but classic for breakfast is Buena Vista (near Girhardelli square in the Wharf area) get the Eggs Benedict and some Irish coffee..

If you care for something a little lower on the totem pole of niceness, my favorite bar to end my evenings in SF is Vesuvio right off of Columbus. Then walk up the street and around the corner for a slice or two from the walk-up window at Golden Boy. The alley next to Vesuvio often has something going on whether it's a popup art gallery, Lowrider photoshoot or just converted to more outdoor seating. Always fun!

My family came to SF in 1848 and I agree with the recommendation of Tadich Grill. It is the oldest San Francisco continuously operating restaurant (1849) IMHO gives you a taste of the real SF

Dang.. I thought I was a native.. My great great grandmother came through the Golden Gate (no bridge then) on a side wheel steamer from New York via Aspinwall and Panama in 1861. Her mother ran what is today Strawberry House on highway 50 up near Placerville. Whereabouts n Los Altos are you? I lived on Newcastle between 2000 and 2009.

Don, you are refering to the 41st Coupe Treffen organized by the German Coupe Club in Northeim mid of May?
Not sure yet if it aligns with job and family but I would definitely be interested in attending. I planned to attend last year when it took place in Bad Soden ("around the corner" from where I am currently living) but then our family holiday covered exactly those days...
Will you be there?
Yes I plan to attend.

I always enjoy House of Nan King, and La Mar for interesting ceviche.

Bring hiking boots and climb all the hills. Urban hiking is fun in the city!

Hey guys,

I am so sorry - just recognized that I never reported back after my trip to SF. Appologies, that was inpolite after you provided a lot of valuable information!
Well, the circumstances were not the most optimal - temperatures still quite low mid of January, I still suffered a bit from a previous cold I cought from my kids some days before take-off, and the congress days were quite packed, even "offering" some "wine-and-cheese poster sessions" in the evenings...
And I was invited for a half-day visit to a lab in Redwood, which was quite interesting but also subtracted from my time directly in SF.
So did not have too much time off and I was not in best adventure mood; nevertheless, I enjoyed the stay and tried to make use of at least some of the tips you provided.
I have to add that I needed to get a sense for the area around Moscone first... I never saw a crack pipe in action in real life before - well, I can strike that from my list of things to experience.
But I managed to get a Waymo drive twice and that is really a futuristic feeling! Amazing, unbelievable in Germany at the time being.
I also was invited to very nice dinner at the Water Bar (unfortunately for me, not the Steakhouse part but the Seafood part - but very tasty anyways).
I also had a delicious NY strip at an Irish pub just next to my hotel (pricey, hell).
The good thing is, I will probably be there again next year - and I will visit some of the other places you recommended for sure!
I also learned now that Exilixis has its HQ in Alameda, just 10min from Don's shop. So maybe I can see that famous E9 halls at least while driving by when visiting collaboration partners ;-)

Again, thanks a lot for all your advise and recommendations and sorry for the late reply :)

Warm regards, Dan

Sorry about the crack pipe! The area around Moscone center has never been nice, my father owned a business close and saw that it was never going to improve and he was correct. Are you in the Biotech industry? I spent 42 years in the industry working with companies like Genentech, Gilead, Applied Biosystems and even helped Exelixis for a bit.

Welcome to drop by both shops when you return.

Hi Mike,
No worries - when I was younger, I have been a bit rougher than today; and I traveled some ruder places than this. Visited some ... exciting ... places in several countries; much more critical situations than this. Just lost to be used to them with aging :)
I am working in cancer research, so yes, I work a lot with biotech and pharna companies. Trying to optimize therapeutic approaches for patients.
What exactly were your fields of activity in biotech?
Kind regards, Dan

That's a very generous offer, Don - thanks a lot!
Looking at the pictures I will probably need to use some tranquilizers before entering your shop :)
I see, I need to do some planning upfront next year :)

Bring a bottle of wine- my new cabinet needs a starter bottle!
