Snugging up all linkage points will make a tired old car... a nice tight tired old car that is a joy to drive. Some that I remember... it has been maybe 10 years since my last '02.

Those linkages include: all brake contact points including adjusting the rear drums and then the handbrake cables. Not more than five clicks on the handbrake to lock the wheels. If you roll gently backwards, both wheels should lock simultaneously when you pull up the handbrake lever . All linkages in the fuel system - some can get a little sloppy. Gear shift linkage under the lever, including the mounting blocks to the rear of the trans, the fore-aft shift lever, the cup the lever sits in; can use a shift lever from another Bimmer for shorter throw. Check that the shifter seal on the back of the trans isn't leaking, ditto the large seal at the trans output shaft. Wheel bearings should be nice and snug but not tight. Wheels straight ahead, loosen the large thin nut on top the steering box, hold with wrench, snug up the setscrew in the middle of it, snug the large nut again. Check the tie rod ends for play. Shocks. Sway bar bushings. Check that the alternator pulley correctly lines up with the pulley on the crankshaft; this is actually a check of the alternator mounting bushings.

A little each day, all the while, of course, driving and enjoying the car.
