WTB: Dash ashtray, early coupes

@LegendE9,

Is there anything different about the top half of the dashboard? That is the hard part of the install. A recently installed grab bar and under tray panels can be removed in well under an hour. Thanks for sharing the pics! Hope it works out for everyone!

Hi Markos. My first post after years of "read-only" (as explained in my introduction post) and I get a reaction of one of the biggest experts in the field. Let me take this opportunity and thank you for all the knowledge you have shared with me through this forum. You rock!

I have to admit it has been a while when I installed the grab bar together with my dad. So it is good news that the grab bar is easily removed. I will actually start looking for a good "normal" grab bar right away, so i can offer both the centre ashtray grab bar with the ashtray for those interested.

I’m no expert but happy to help.

The under dash panel come off quickly with a few screws. I don’t think you need to remove it to get the grab bar off though.

To remove the grab bar, gently remove the aluminum trim. It is a press fit. Then there are about 10 screws that secure it.

Hi guys. I have found one today!

When I bought my silver Csi project it had lots of parts from a unknown donor car. The silver is almost ready now. And I’m working on my other Csi (taiga) now. That one has a very bad dashboard so we just took one from the donor parts. After install it turned out to have a bigger hole around the mid console. That is when i found out the early central ashtray set up existed at all.

I always planned to use an old dashboard part to match the hole and use it as a storage for iphone/bluetooth/dab radio as I didn’t expect to have the actual ashtray. But going through some parts today I found it! See pics below.

And surprisingly I found cut outs in the metal dashboard support in my ‘74 Csi, that are designed for the ashtray holder to slide into. (See pics). Seems bmw never changed the design after the first 170 e9s , whilst the center ashtray was deleted.

Obviously I am willing to help others to restore their cars to original specs with this rare part. My taiga is ‘74 so shouldn’t have it. Problem tho is that I have already installed the dashboard, the wood trim, the dashboard top etc.

Let me know when you are interested. If so, we’ll try and figure out a price that compensates for taking out the full dashboard and installing a good ‘74 one.

I’m also happy to measure up whatever you need, so you can try and copy the part.

greets,
LeG9ND
LeG9ND - Long shot, but if you still have that ashtray I'm interested. I will PM you
