My -69 2800Cs is missing the large ashtray sitting in the dash, above the glove box.
If anyone have one laying around, regardless of condition, I am interested.

Never seen one as well! (but then I do have a chrome rear view mirror which I also never saw in another E9...)

So my question to you; what do you now have? A large hole?

I'm doubting if this was ever supplied from factory.

These are photos of an ashtray from a 2000CS. I believe you will find that other than the face the ashtray is the same. I will try to find the correct one for you or at least the front face which is attached by to screws.

That would make chronological sense, Harry...
Like finding a new species of dinosaur...
Also, maybe Frogish would post a picture of the full door/wood showing what a non-ashtray example looks like.

I do have the matching glove box which have a small cutout to give room for the fingers to grab the ashtray.
I have later style door panels with ashtrays.
In my dash is currently just a large hole where the ashtray is supposed to be.

The photos I attached are from a guy in Sweden who recently restored a coupe with this rare feature - unfortunately he did not have another ashtray...

Looks like the incorrect front but that can surely be fixed. Can you take some measurement so I can compare to my dash?

@stphers that looks promising! I'm sure someone has a sacraficial glovebox door to use for the matching face.

Another pic of the face:

Stephers, I noticed that koopman had written some measurements in his pics.
I think it will fit, will double check tomorrow.

Hi guys. I have found one today!

When I bought my silver Csi project it had lots of parts from a unknown donor car. The silver is almost ready now. And I’m working on my other Csi (taiga) now. That one has a very bad dashboard so we just took one from the donor parts. After install it turned out to have a bigger hole around the mid console. That is when i found out the early central ashtray set up existed at all.

I always planned to use an old dashboard part to match the hole and use it as a storage for iphone/bluetooth/dab radio as I didn’t expect to have the actual ashtray. But going through some parts today I found it! See pics below.

And surprisingly I found cut outs in the metal dashboard support in my ‘74 Csi, that are designed for the ashtray holder to slide into. (See pics). Seems bmw never changed the design after the first 170 e9s , whilst the center ashtray was deleted.

Obviously I am willing to help others to restore their cars to original specs with this rare part. My taiga is ‘74 so shouldn’t have it. Problem tho is that I have already installed the dashboard, the wood trim, the dashboard top etc.

Let me know when you are interested. If so, we’ll try and figure out a price that compensates for taking out the full dashboard and installing a good ‘74 one.

I’m also happy to measure up whatever you need, so you can try and copy the part.

greets,
LeG9ND
